Italian Crema Ice Cream

Contrary to popular belief, vanilla ice cream is not the purest ice cream flavor. That title belongs to gelato alla crema, which is made like any other ice cream but without any added flavors, just the pure goodness of milk and cream. And get this-- you only need 6 ingredients to make it. Simply heat up a thin, basic custard to begin, then strain and chill it overnight before churning and freezing your ice cream. As far as toppings go, "less is more" also applies. Try one of Chef John's favorites: a dash of ground espresso beans or a drizzle of EVOO studded with sea salt.
