You can buy Ball brand mason jars for about $11 for 12 at any ACE Hardware Store and they also sell plastic lids that are BPA free ($4 for 8 lids). I have been using mason jars to store everything including frozen foods. The pint size are freezer safe and are great for storing soups, stews, sauces, etc. They are also non toxic and do not stain. I prefer the wide mouth jars since they are easier to fill and clean.

How are you supposed to shake and mix the salad when the jar is packed full? Also, it seems kind of heavy and fragile to take a glass jar to work for lunch.

Why couldn't you save a large plastic Miracle Whip jar? It's light weight and unbreakable.
