Why do not cut the borders of the bread before preparing the sandwich?

I think making this a double decker sandwich is a mistake. The ham/turkey can have a slice of cheese on each side, with each slice of bread battered, and have a sandwich that will hold together. That double deck one is not going to stick together, without several long toothpicks!
