Update: Remember back in June when news broke of a possible Dunkaroos cereal coming to stores in the indefinite future? Well, the rumors are true. According to General Mills, Dunkaroos cereal will be hitting supermarket shelves this winter.

"Packed with nostalgia in every spoonful, this cereal brings vanilla frosting flavored-cookie cereal together with sweet and crunchy rainbow sprinkles," says a product listing from General Mills.

It's been quite the year for Dunkaroos. First, Dunkaroos themselves came back to stores, marking one of the few good things that happened in 2020. August brought a Dunkaroos beer, and then in November, holiday cookie season got a jump start thanks to Dunkaroos cookie dough. We'll keep waiting patiently for any other Dunkaroos spin-offs, so please, Dunkaroos, keep the ideas coming.

A little while back, in the midst of a pandemic, we found out that beloved frosting-based ‘90s snack Dunkaroos would be hitting store shelves once again. Unfortunately, their triumphant comeback wasn’t enough to alter the trajectory of the dumpster fire that has been 2020… but maybe Dunkaroos cereal somehow will.

Yup, you heard that right: not only can you dip cookies into frosting and call it a snack again, but you can now call it a breakfast. First tipped off by @CereaLife and later reiterated by @SnackGator, it sure looks like General Mills has something very special planned for the near future.

Based on what we can infer from the above Instagram that we have at our disposal, it would seem that Dunkaroos cereal looks like it emphasizes the cookie over the frosting, which makes sense. As @SnackGator sees it, the closest approximation to this colorful funfetti-flecked Dunkaroos cereal would probably be a birthday cake version of Cookie Crisp. I can’t really imagine anything that sounds much better than that.

Unfortunately, there’s no official word on when this breakfast version of Dunkaroos (something I never dreamed I’d be able to type) will hit store shelves. It’s possible that General Mills is giving standard-edition dunkaroos some time to shine before blowing everyone’s minds with the cereal version.

So maybe there’s some hope for this terrible year after all. I’m not going to claim that Dunkaroos cereal can somehow cure Covid-19 or heal the deep, systemic problems with racism and policing in this country. But I can say with some level of confidence that turning one of the best snacks of the ‘90s into a cereal probably won’t make things any worse.
