Sweet Potato Casserole II
Mmmmmm! Sweet potatoes topped with creamy marshmallows.
Mmmmmm! Sweet potatoes topped with creamy marshmallows.
This was a hit this thanksgiving! Only change I made is I added a half cup of milk to make it creamier!
This was absolutely delicious. I substituted this for another recipe I have made before at the last minute. Everyone loved it. Instead of boiling the potatoes, I baked them on 400 for one hour and 30 minutes. It just seemed easier since raw sweet potatoes are like rocks and very hard to cut. I forgot the cinnamon, but they were so good that next time I will probably leave it out. They were surprisingly sweet with not huge amount of sugar.
Comes out flawless every time. Easy to make and tastes great. I cut out the OJ myself, but thats just taste.
I made it for a work pot luck. The pan was scrapped clean. Even had a couple of co workers ask for the recipe.
First time I ever made this was for Thanksgiving dinner. I used this recipe, and it was a hit! Even people who don't like sweet potatoes ate it and loved it! I know make this version for every holiday!
wouderfull so meny flavers it was good looking
This recipe is great! I couldn't find vegetarian marshmallows so I followed "MomSavedByGrace"'s suggestion and made a streusel topping, and it was fabulous! The brown sugar made it just sweet enough and the addition of pecans gave it a bit of crunch.
Great and easy recipe, I personally used butter instead of margarin, brown cane sugar, and extra cinnamon (two taps from the spice bottle). Was a big hit at Thanksgiving this year.
I made this for Thanksgiving, and everyone loved it. I added the streussel topping mentioned in a previous review. Will definitely make this again!
Sensational! I made this today for Thanksgiving,& everyone loved it. My friend, who doesn't normally like sweet potatoes, said it was great & had two helpings. Thank you!
Followed this recipe and added some chopped pecans. Delicious and easy!
I got charged with making thanksgiving dinner this year. I used this recipe and it was the favorite of the entire meal. my dad saved it in the fridge and every time someone came over insisted they try it! thanks for helping me impress my dad, this recipe was amazing.quick, easy, delicious.
This rating comes from others who I served this dish to since I do not care for sweet potatoes. I am not sure they were being completely honest though as only a little portion of the casserole was eaten! One of the problems, could have been my fault. I did not have any plain cinnamon so I used pumpkin pie spice. I thought that perhaps the mixture of spices would give it good flavor. I had one person comment that they didn't care for the spices very much. That it almost tasted bitter. I explained that it was probably the nutmeg in the pumpkin pie spice and they agreed that was probably it. So, just using cinnamon may have helped but I still don't think much more of it would have been eaten. I am done trying sweet potatoe casserole as this is the second year in a row and second recipe that has just not been a hit with my family.
This is the exact recipe I grew up with! The only thing my mom adds is 1/4 cup crushed pineapple (strained). I went above that and add a dash of nutmeg and fold in a few handfuls of fresh cranberries in there too. SO DELICIOUS!
i have been bringing this recipe to thanksgiving for four years now and STILL get wide eyed compliments of how delicious it is! Family members who have confessed to hating sweet potatoes (and only trying because they didnt know what it was) are crazy about it!! This recipe deserves to be top of the list for holidays, it makes you famous in your family and it tastes like you are having dessert with dinner....which is my favorite part! :)
I made this for Canadian Thanksgiving (October), and any that didn't go at the table was requested for the take-home packages! It got raves! I didn't add the OJ, but I did toss in a couple punches of nutmeg (next time, might add a bit of Allspice). Easy to make, inexpensive, great reviews = WINNER!
Good but nothing extraordinary! I would make it again but I was looking for more pizzaz
everyone liked it
OH YES!!! I loved this recipe. No changes what so ever. The citris flavor does surprise you but it is so light tasting in your mouth instead of heavy/overpowering like a traditional sp casserole. YUM and Thank YOU for sharing.
These were really delicious. The splash of OJ keeps them from being too sweet. My father-in-law is not a huge fan of sweet potatoes and he loved them. Will continue to use this recipe. Thanks!
This is my favorite sweet potato casserole recipe! My husband and I forgot we had put it in our recipe box here and freaked out at the prospect of not being able to find it again!!! Making this again this Thanksgiving!
Didn't care for the OJ taste
Made this for Thanksgiving for my parents, followed the directions exactly, but it wasn't well received. I think for out family, it was just the spices. Normally the sweet potatoes are prepared without spice and I didn't realize since I never actually eat them. Thanks for the recipe, might just have to try it out on them another time.
Loved it !! i omited the orange juice and still came out wonderful! my husband even loved it ( and he's really finiky)its a keeper! i did used granulated brown sugar instead of regular brown sugar...but great!! thanks 4 the recipe!
Another great recipe. When I make it again though, I'm going to cut back on the Orange juice. I could REALLY taste it in the finished product here. Not bad, just not the flavor I was ultimately going for.
I did this for Thanksgiving this year. First of all, I do not care for sweet potatoes but it seems that everyone looks for this as a side dish, so I decided to use this recipe. I have to say that it was the hit of the dinner, everyone loved it. There was no left overs for this dish. The only thing that I may have done differently was that I made this dish the night before and reheated it. I will keep this recipe and make it for Christmas as well.
This made me remember back when Mom made this for us a few times a month. A definite favorite for our family!
This is just what I was expecting - classic sweet potato casserole. Yum!
Yummy and sweet recipe! I will probably cut back on the brown sugar and butter next time though, and I only added 1 tbsp of the juice, but still a great recipe with minimal ingredients!
I made this for Thanksgiving yesterday and it turned out fantastic! I followed the recipe exactly and everyone loved it. Thanks for sharing Stephanie! This dish will be a new holiday tradition for my family!
My mother was coming over to spend a pre-Christmas lunch and I needed a quick, simple sweet potato casserole for my last minute procrastinations. This recipe saved me and was so simple to make. Also, it was really yummy. The pinch of cinnamon is a wonderful touch. Thanks. Definitely gonna make this again!
Very nice dish and easy to prepare.
YUMMY! First time making it but will be cooking this as often as I can!!
Very good. I made this for Thanksgiving. It was wonderful. I added a splash of orange extract as well as the orange juice to give it a little more citrus flavor. I also didn't whip the potatoes, I just lightly mashed them because our family likes them chunky. Excellent recipe...will make this again - every year.
This was the first time I had ever made a sweet potato casserole. My kids loved it! It was perfect.
This was pretty good. But as is usual for recipes in allrecipes, it is pretty sweet. I cut the sugar in half and used a whole lot more cinnamon and it turned out pretty good.
I make this every year hubby loves it!!
This is awesome! Didn't measure the brown sugar or OJ, just did them to taste. It is WAY more than 8 servings though. Everyone went back for seconds & we still had tons of leftovers! I will say this though: people use "yams" and "sweet potatoes" interchangably and they are not! They are two different things. If you want the pretty orange casserole like the pictures show you want to use yams. Sweet potatoes barely have more color than a normal potato. I used 1/2 of each as I like the orange, but sweet potatoes are supposed to be better health wise.
My husband now loves sweet potatoes! Healthy and yummy:)
not my cup-o-tea. My mom always makes just sweet potatos out of the can on the stove top with brown sugar. So they are big chunks in a sweet sauce. I wanted to try something different, and I will not do that again, for sweet potatos at least. I didn't like the consistancy. I took the suggestion of mashing instead of blending and it didn't help much, kindof dry and bland.
Just made this today, YUMMY!!!! WOW!!! It was wonderful before I even added the marshmallows! I followed the advice of others and left out the orange juice. This was first time for me to make a sweet potato casserole and this recipe was super easy!!! I also used a food processor to puree the sweet potatoes, transferred them to another bowl and stirred in rest of the ingredients with a spatula. YUMMY, YUMMY, YUMMY!!!! I'll be making these more often!
It was a big hit during the holidays
turned out a little mushy, like baby food. Will try and firm up next time by mashing the potatoes instead of blending them.
I left out the margarine and orange juice only adding the cinnamon and brown sugar (also sometimes I will add pumpkin puree as well) and this came out delicious!! I have always tried to replicate my grandmothers sweet potatoes and my husband says that this recipe is just as good if not better. Delicious!!
I am giving this just two stars b/c I altered it and the fam liked it my way. I omitted almost half the sugar and a bit of the marshmallows, too. I also added nutmeg and ginger. Original recipe would have been waaay too sweet. I have two children and it went over very well at the dinner table.
i don't like sweet potatoes but everybody in my house loved them, thanksgiving was a success thanks to this recipe... :)
I make this for Thanksgiving every year and the family loves it! My niece always says it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without them!
Made this for Thanksgiving - everyone loved it!
Oops, there are two Sweet Potato Casserole II by Stephanie Phillips & Kraney's review is on the other one. Sorry. The only change I made was using red garnet yams and less brown sugar (to taste). Family loved it.
I will just make 1/2 of this the next time. I did not use any orange juice, & added more cinnamon . It was to much for our small family
Tried this recipe out for Thanksgiving and loved it. I would definitly make this a again. Didn't put orange juice in it.
Good. But you need an extra sweet potato, another 1/4 cup of brown sugar, gotta use real butter!, 2 tsp of cinnamon, add pecan chips over the top and bake the mixture alone for 35-40 minutes before adding the mallows and baking for an additional 10... try it ;)
Delicious and not too sweet! One of my families favorites!
I made this last night (for a whole bunch of my friends (In college!)) and everybody loved it!! I needed to find a recipe for thanksgiving and I believe I have found the perfect one! I used 1 40oz can of Yams instead of the sweet potatoes. I just heated them up, then drained them of the syrup. Added the rest the ingredients but I added milk in place of the orange juice based off of other reviews. I cooked it in a 9X9 pan for about 20 minutes! Wonderful!
Using a 9x13 pan, I could only stack half a 10.5 oz bag of marshmallows 1-1/2 deep. Any more would have been messy and overly decadent. Otherwise, the recipe was spot-on! Thanks for sharing this! :) Oh, we also used two large (40 oz?) cans of sweet potatoes, which made this recipe a breeze.
It turned out really well, but we used jumbo marshmallows instead of mini-it was delicious!
I have been using this recipe for almost 10 years now. The ONLY one I use!
My boys and I loved this (hubby isn't a fan of marshmallows so his review doesn't count :D ) Added some Allspice (like we do in our sweet potato pies) and omitted the orange juice the second time around. Great dish to bring to family get togethers!
I made half the recipe. It was so good and was excited to eat the leftovers.
I started making this on my own a few years ago after having it at a party. However, like some I did not care for the orange taste and replaced it with molassas. This gave it a smoky flavor and my family really likes it.
Delish! Was a big hit.
This is the first time in my entire life that I've EVER liked sweet potatoes! This was delicious even before I baked it! I added pure vanilla extract like one reviewer suggested, and it was deLISH! This is the easiest and tastiest sweet potato dish I've ever tried. Thank you!
This was very good. I skipped the orange juice and used real butter. Turned out great!
Great recipe! I love to put orange juice in and love the little citerus flavor! I also put some mixed dried berries with a casserole which is great taste too!
It was a great base.. But I did 1/4 of the marshmallows, and omitted the orange juice. Just cause I didn't want for it to be sooo sweet and desert like.. By not putting so much of the marshmallows i was able to control the sweetness of it.
This is so easy to make and delicious. It's just like the recipe my Grandma made. I wouldn't change a thing!
This is a great recipe. I have made it this way and then tried other things such as; I added chopped walnuts, instead of oj I used apple cider. the later is my families fave. I would recommend this recipe to others
I added salt, pepper and turmeric....super easy and it was a hit!
SO EASY AND LOVE THE TASTE!
This casserole is amazing, I am not big on eating leftovers and I ate this for 5 days! I did add 1/2 cup of chopped pecans to the potato mixture to give it some crunch. This was a hit with my entire family, even the 18 month old loved it!
I made this for my family to rave reviews and then for my husbands family and received the same. It has now become a family favorite. I like it because it is quick, easy and can be made in advance. Thanks so much Stephanie!
I'm newly married and wanted to contribute a dish to my family's Thanksgiving dinner. It was my first time making sweet potato casserole. What a HIT! There was nothing left in the container! I adjusted the OJ to taste as it says. I didn't put in as much as it stated. It was awesome! Very close to Boston Market's sweet potato casserole. Will definitely make this every Thanksgiving.
Sinfully good! I never had sweet potato casserole before. I loved it!
Yummy, easy, and a family hit. This was perfect for my first Thanksgiving to prepare. I will definitely make again soon!
So I accidentally got white sweet potatoes instead of the orange ones (what some people think are yams, they aren't a yam is a different thing) but still used this recipe and they were fantastic. If you have someone who doesn't like the orange sweet potatoes because they are too sweet and the texture is too soft I highly suggest the white sweet potato.
I like to add a new recipe every year. Last year I added this and the slow cooker mashed potatoes it was convienent not being locked in the kitchen all day. The family loved both dishes we will be repeating these for years to come.
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! My 5 year old couldn't get enough! And, I HATE marshmallows, but completely enjoyed them in this casserole! Congratulations, you got me to eat marshmallows, and LIKE IT! LOL
This was great for Thanksgiving my husband love it he said he would give it seven stars if he could. Will be a keeper!!!
made this saturday night. delicious! i will make it again for sure!
A little brown sugar and cinnamon makes everything taste better :-) I cut out the butter and they still tasted great.
OM...oh so good..followed the recipe as is and it came out so good..next yr will double the recipe just so i can have some leftovers..
yum!! simple & delicious. I used some orange zest and squeezed 1/2 a fresh orange in place of the OJ. Thanks!!
i felt that with the marshmallows, brown sugar, OJ, and natural sweetness of sweet potatoes, that it was pretty sugary. i am not sure yet if i like having my sweet potatoes blended or just cut up. i will make this again, but cut down on the sugar
Very easy and delicious. Highly recommend that you go with fresh sweet potatos. Little effort for a delicious pay-off. I forgot the orange juice and didn't miss it a bit. Will add nuts next time, I think.
Very, very good. I thought it was too sweet but the rest of my family loved it just the way it was!
I made this recipe for Thanksgiving and it was good but didn't seem to wow anyone. I agree with the other reviews about that "orangey" taste -- it just wasn't something that many people warmed up to. If I made them again I would nix the orange juice as well. I tried a diff recipe for Christmas and overall it was a much bigger hit with the same people.
So easy, so tasty. My daughter clamored to lick the bowl. Yum!!!
Absolutely delicious. I used half the orange juice it called for and added a bit of vanilla extract, but otherwise kept it the same.
baked potatoes like another had suggested and skin peeled right off, used ingredients exactly as listed, wouldnt change a thing next time! Made for a church potluck and everyone loved it!
It was a hit with the family! Very easy to prepare.
Simple and DELICIOUS. Can't go wrong with this classic, and there is nothing better than using fresh sweet potatoes. yum, yum, yum.
Wow, really yummy! I added some graham crackers, brown sugar and butter to make a crunchy topping. I also only used 1/2 the bag of marshmallows.
This has been my absolute favorite Sweet Potato Casserole recipe. It was delicious! I also shared this recipe with a friend of mine for Thanksgiving and she said it was a hit!
