F.Y.I. if you're abroad and can't find cornstarch flour works all the same. Still turned out delicious.
I stumbled upon this recipe quite a while ago and forgot to review it. I made a ton of changes but it wasn't due to preference it was more due to a lack of ingredients in the house. However it still came out excellent so here's a way you can sub a few things and still have it come out really good: Used boneless/skinless breast instead of thighs regular onion 1/4 cup (or more depending on personal preference) of chili powder instead of chilis 2 tsp of orange extract instead of zest regular white vinegar instead of rice and substituted all of the oils with regular oil but added 2 tbsp of peanut butter to give it that peanut oil flavor. VERY IMPORTANT to use the double fry method though this keeps the chicken super crispy! Excellent recipe.
We really enjoyed this recipe! We followed the directions just as they were written and really liked the sauce not as thick and sugary as restaurants. Also frying the chicken twice made it nice a crunchy and not goopy.
Absolutely delicious. Most flavorful General Tsao's Chicken that I have ever had. Followed the recipe as directed with one exception. Had to substitute red pepper seeds for the whole chilies. I used about a teaspoon full. This gave the meal a nice amount a heat without overpowering my children's palate. Thank you for sharing!
Fantastic! I marinated the chicken in soy sauce white wine vinegar and brown sugar for a few hours. I tossed with cornstarch and pan fried instead of deep frying. The result isn't as crispy but even the crispiest chicken gets soggy after a couple minutes in sauce. I added fresh ginger and used chili garlic sauce instead of dried chilis. It tasted completely "authentic" (for a dish that typifies inauthenticity) and was well worth the calories.
I am only rating the sauce in this recipe because that is the only part I used. The only substitution was I used 2 tsp. of chili paste in place of the dried chilies because that is what I had. As far as the chicken I used the batter recipe from the Perfect Sesame Chicken from this site (which I have used before sucessfully). Also I baked the chicken instead of frying it this time and I have to say I liked it better baked - tasted better to me leaves less mess to clean up and is more healthy anyway. I will definately use this sauce recipe again but maybe cut back on the sugar a little bit and use more orange peel.
If I could give this recipe 10 stars I would do so! This was absolutely DELICIOUS! The whole family tore it up NO leftovers. Definitely of restaurant quality if not better. I have tried many homemade oriental recipes and NONE are as good. I'm not sure what the purpose is of double frying but will continue to do so as I don't want to chance it affecting the awesome outcome. THANK YOU!!!!
Excellent!...... the only modifications i made were cut out some of the oil to make it a little healthier. And I added a little chopped bell pepper & celery. Other than it this recipe is excellent! Thanks for sharing!
