This was possibly the best sausage gravy I've ever had. I doubled the flour and milk as many reviewers suggested, but turned out I didn't need to double the grease. :) I used regular pork sausage seasoned with a bit of garlic and onion powder, sage, a tiny bit of thyme, and of course lots of black pepper. It did not need salt at all. The great thing about this recipe is that you can make the gravy right in the pan with the sausage. I've never done it that way before, and I've made lots of gravy! Try it! You'll like it!
Read MoreToo thick. Bill's Sausage Gravy from this site is perfect.

I wanted to go to Cracker Barrel for breakfast, but money was tight, and my husband said, "We have biscuits in the fridge if you want to make eggs." I said, "What about biscuits and gravy?" I found this recipe, and used a 7oz package of brown and serve sausage links cut into dimes. Because there was little grease, I added a Tbsp of butter to get the flour dissolved and then followed the recipe exactly. The sauce gets really thick the longer you cook it, so I added a splash of milk to thin it a bit. I'm so glad I stayed in for breakfast this morning. This tasted like the gravy you get in a restaurant with your biscuits. A real keeper! Thanks so much!
This is pretty much how I make my gravy...and it always turs out delicious. I only use 3 TBSP flour and sometimes I will ues 3 cups milk to make it stretch a little further.
Hubby loves biscuits and gravy on weekend mornings...so I am always trying to find different ways to make it. Made this recipe exactly as written with the exception of the sausage (I had sage sausage on hand). It turned out delicious. Hubby loved it. Thanks for the post.
This is an excellent, easy recipe that has become a family favorite! I seem to be homemade gravy impaired but this comes out perfect every single time. I always add some garlic and onion powder and that makes it even better.
Like the commercial goes .... "Bob Evans, down on the farm" I grew up eating Bob Evans sausage gravy and biscuts at the Original Bob Evans Restaurant in Rio Grande,Ohio. This recipe is the original recipe. You can't improve on perfection.
This was so easy to make, and my husband loved it. I did cut the amount of sausage in half as suggested by another review, and it still had more than enough sausage. Thanks!
Delicious! I added small amounts of flour every few minutes to make it thicker as I was stirring.
my secret~ I added a little kick to the recipe by adding some minced garlic, chopped onion and red pepper flakes to the store brand sausage during browning. Makes for the best sausage gravy ever! you wont want to go back to the plain black pepper gravy again.
My mother used to make me biscuits and gravy as a child . the resteraunts never make them right I had just about gave up on having them any where but at her home she lives 1200 miles away so i am lucky if I get them once a year. (she won't share her recipes) I found yours and I swear they taste Identical to hers!!! I used sage sausage though, I can remember her doing that. Thank you so much I have made it three times already and i just found the recipe two weeks ago. My kids think mommy is a genius in the kitchen thanks to all recipes. And you just made my taste buds think so to LOL Thank you!!!
Makes an awesome breakfast. Made gravy exactly as written and baked up a can of buttermilk biscuits, and hubby asked where I bought it from. He loved it and so did the kids. Will make this over and over and over......
This was not only delicious, but quick and easy. I followed others' suggestions and doubled the sauce (used twice the original amout of flour and milk, but used the same amount of sausage ) and served with scrambed eggs over Pillsbury biscuits-not the refrigerated dough, but the ones you find in the freezer section of the grocery store. If you don't like a saucier gravy, then I would stick to the original. Either way it's good. Thanks to those whose suggestions I used.
I've been craving biscuits and gravy that a certain place from my hometown made and I was happy to discover this tasted exactly like it. I had 2 bratwurst to use up, so that is what I used. I think next time I'll double the milk and flour like others mentioned. A keeper.
This is a very good sausage gravy recipe... however it does not make four servings. I only used 1/3 of a pound of sausage and made the gravy as written. I ate the entire thing myself and was really full. I think 2 servings is the max you will get out of the gravy.
This recipe ROCKS!!! Wish I could give this one more than 5 stars! It was EXTREMELY simple to make and absolutely delicious! The only thing I added was more black pepper... My husband and daughter agree that we never need to order this out at restaurants anymore. It's better at home with this recipe!
This was delicious! I ended up adding about another 1/4 cup of milk, because it was so thick and I like my gravy a little thinner. But, wonderful! Will definitely make again!
My family loved it. I was able to substitute lactose free milk in the recipe, & although it made it sweeter, it was still delicious and there were no leftovers! So easy and a nice change from eggs or pancakes on those cold mornings.
I made this for Mother's Day Brunch. The best part is that I made it the day before and just reheated it on the stove before brunch. Such a timesaver and EVERYONE had seconds. I had two people asked me for the recipe. YUM
This was the perfect sausage gravy recipe. It tastes better than I have ever had in ANY restaraunt! Will use again and again.
My hubby was craving sausage gravy and biscuits....gravy isn't my thing so he looked up this recipe and made it. He used the exact ingredients that the recipe called for. We both thought there was WAY too much sausage in it for my taste, but otherwise it was good so I gave it 4 stars.
I like using less sausage and more milk, but this is a great recipe that one can customize. Thanks.
This was easy to make and tasted good! I doubled the recipe because I have a large family & added sauteed garlic to the gravy for added flavor. It still needed a little extra something so I added 1 chicken bouillon cube and thinned the gravy out with another cup of milk. I used a total of 2-lbs. sausage, 5 cups of milk, 4 cloves of garlic, 1 bouillon cube and only pepper to taste. Don't need the added salt if you use the bouillon. My suggestion, make your flour, butter roue first letting the flour cook for a few minutes before you add the milk (this gets rid of the flour taste)... then proceed to make the gravy, adding the milk slowly. When gravy is done, add the sausage back to the gravy and let simmer for 10-15 minutes till all the flavors meld. I made this with [Fluffy Biscuit] recipe found on here! Sausage Biscuits-n-Gravy is a wonderful comfort food for the whole family! Thanks!
This was my first time making sausage gravy. The recipe was delicious and easy! Fool-proof.
This was really good. For extra creaminess use whole milk. Adding a little butter to the sausage while browning helps to brown the sauce as well
The gravy was pretty tasty. It turned brown, which I didn't expect (all pictures show white gravy) and was really thick. Next time I'll decrease the flour by 1/2 and increase the milk by 1/2 cup or so. I used italian sausage to use it up (1/2 a tube) and would probably recommend original b/c of the strong flavor, but it was still good. I used J.P.'s Big Daddy Biscuits recipe with this.
Very good...very easy. We served with warm biscuits. We will make this again.
I, too, doubled the milk and flour. The result was the perfect ratio of gravy to sausage. Don't worry, it's still plenty chunky!
YUMM! That is all that needs to be said. No alterations needed.
I've never made gravy before and was a little leary of trying to make it, but it turned out perfect! My husband loved it!
great basic sausage recipe! without thinking i used reduced fat sausage and couldn't get enough grease! I had to add extra oil and butter. it's not going to be that healthy anyways so splurge and get full fat sausage!
I had never made sausage gravy before this. It was easy and wonderful.
Good, simple recipe for sausage gravy. I followed the recipe as written, except I took out about 1/4 cup of the sausage. Next time, I might take out more or make more gravy. I like more gravy/less sausage. I let the gravy sit for a few minutes while the biscuits finished, and it got really thick, so I added some water to thin it out. It still tasted great. I will make this again.
I have made this a few times and in order for it to be rated 5 stars for me there are a few changes: Use 1/2 roll of sage flavored sausage, 3 tbsp butter added to the sausage after it's browned and then cook with the flour. After you add the milk and thicken it up, add a little salt, lots of fresh cracked pepper and a little ground sage. Before I added the sage it still felt like it was missing something, then I added that and it was perfect. Enjoy!
Very easy. Turned out perfect. I actually used 5 frozen patties, thawed, chopped and cooked. The eyeballed the rest.
Very Yummy!!! I made this according to the directions except that I used Jimmy Dean Sausage.
I may never make gravy without sausage again. So easy and delicious!
I have been trying for years to get this just right and now I found it I do double the gravy recipe and use zesty roll but it tast just like I went to Bobs restaurant I do some eggs and home fries some bacon and I have a homestead at home Gotta say GREAT
this is easy to make and great! I did only use 1/2 lb. of sausage when I made it and if you do like more gravy than meat, I recommend adding more milk when making to make the gravy. I also recommend doubling the recipe, if you want to feed more than four people.
This was really good, but my one suggestion was to cook the patties whole and then cut them into cubes because I like chunks of sausage in my gravy rather than ground meat. Other than that fantastic!
Very good and very easy!! I liked the gravy being thick but may try a little more milk next time. Made J.P.'s Big Daddy Biscuits to go with this. Yummy!
This is like the sausage gravy that you'll find at your favorite greasy spoon! That say's a lot. All you have to do is get the salt and pepper to your liking. Personally, I like a little less sausage in mine. I also like to add a little Tobasco sauce to mine at the table. But over all this is the sausage gravy that my family gets when I fix biscuits and gravy for breakfast.
My hubby loves biscuits and gravy! I usually mess it up. Not this time:) I couldn't find Bob Evans sausage so I use the store brand country sausage. I did add some more butter/grape seed oil since the sausage didn't give off very much fat. I added the flour and cooked that while I was getting the biscuits out of the oven. Put it all together and got rave reviews from my sweety! Thanks BE for reminding me to KISS!
I don't eat pork so I used turkey breakfast sausage and I loved this soooo much! Also since there wasn't as much fat drippings from the turkey, I added 3 tbsp butter when browning the sausage. I also doubled the sauce. YUM
I have stopped trying to find a better Sausage Gravy. This one hits the mark perfectly. One variation I like to do is after browning the sausage, putting it in a food processor and turning it into a fine crumble. Then cut the flour and milk in half. Produces same results without the "heavy" feeling of a full dose. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
I did double the milk and flour to have more gravy with the sausage. It was a simple gravy and had a great taste.
I love this. Super simple and basic, the best way to work. I made it with a mild sausage and skim milk, still came out just right. I made sure to leave the heat on medium, and let it cook slowly. This kept the sausage from burning in spots and not cooking in others, and the milk slowly thickened, so it didn't burn in the pan. Wonderful breakfast on a cold morning!
Very yummy! I needed a smaller portion, but since most people recommended doubling the flour and milk, I simply used 1/2 a pound of ground sausage and the amount of flour and milk that were recommended. There was not enough grease and drippings from using 1/2 a pound, so I added 2 Tablespoons of butter after browning the meat then added the flour and milk once it was melted.
Great comfort food! Served this with Teena's Overnight Southern Buttermilk Biscuits from this website.
I can't believe I never rated this! This is the easiest, tastiest, country gravy I have ever had. I am not a big biscuits and gravy fan, but this is DELICIOUS! I make this at least once a month. Any time my nephews or nieces are over visiting, they want me to make it every morning! There is never any leftovers, can normally make to packages of biscuits for one pan of gravy.
Made this for my son, who LOVES Biscuits n' Gravy! On the advice of other reviewers I doubled the flour and milk. I was leary of adding the flour to the sausage without making a roux first, but it turned out fine! I did add 2 tbsps of butter to the sausage BEFORE the flour as the sausage was a bit dry. My son did a "taste test" and declared it bland but after adding about half a tsp each of thyme, rubbed sage and fresh cracked black pepper he declared it perfect!
GREAT recipe! Also, I've just made the gravy before (flour, milk, S&P) then added crumbled up bacon and its delicious also!
Great recipe! But next time I will definitely add more milk. It was pretty much all sausage, hardly any gravy. But it was very delicious!!
I am the worst at making gravy. But with this recipe I was flawless. Turned out perfect! Thanks
Overall....this is a great recipe. I found there wasn't enough gravy, so I doubled the flour and milk but kept the same amount of sausage...glad I did....YUM!
I used jimmy dean Sage sausage...Other than that did exactly what it called for. I use frozen biscuits Pillsbury southern style.very good
Some good tips to take this from great to lick the plate: substitue a quarter of your milk for canned evaporated milk, brown sausage til crispy on edges before adding other ingredients, if you're multiplying flour/milk make sure to add two tbs of butter per extra portions of flour/milk to sausage after browned. Happy cooking!
Ha Ha Ha...what leftovers! I am not a fan of sausage, or sausage gravy, but my husband is. He has been looking for the "perfect sausage gravy and biscuits" for a while now. He found it this morning when I served him this! I used a pound and a half (had a half pound leftover from last Sunday's attempt by my husband), and doubled the flour and milk. I even liked it!
Amazing!! I used 1/2 cup of flour, sprinkled on top of the sausage when done browning, and added milk, 1 cup at a time (I used 3) letting the gravy thicken between cups, until I felt I had a good sausage to gravy ratio. Stir frequently and let the gravy simmer to thicken.
I made breakfast for dinner and this was just delish! My picky kids LOVED it!
fantastic maybe a little too sausage but who cares add more milk and flour...great job bob!
Had I known sausage gravy was this easy I would have made it a long time ago.I doubled the milk and flour. Used 1/2 regular sausage and 1/2 hot...everyone loved it <3
Comfort food at it's finest! I did double the gravy but not the sausage amount. Used 3/4 whole milk and 1/4 half n half ratio for added creaminess. Needed to add a bit of butter to the sausage drippings in or to get the right flour to fat ratio. At the end I added fresh cracked black pepper and a few shakes Tabasco sauce for an extremely subtle heat. Fabulous on biscuits and even more so topping a breakfast skillet of hash browns, eggs biscuits and cheddar cheese!
Great sausage gravy! It was my first time making it and this is the perfect recipe!
I have never successfully made gravy before, but this came out great! The family loved it. I used about 1/3 of the sausaged and it tasted great. Very easy!
This recipe worked wonderfully for me, and I used turkey sausage crumbles. No more buying the mix for me, and this was fairly healthy, especially over our wheat biscuits.
double the gravy like other reviewers suggest. Make sure to double the flour while adding to the sausage and not after the milk has been poured in.
Awesome gravy!!!!!! We have a large family so I used 2lbs of sausage and doubled the milk and flour and it turned out GREAT!!!
Made this recipe on a whim and didn't do any research or comparisons after reading the reviews. This made enough for about 6 biscuits and it was the perfect consistency! I added about 6 shakes of old bay because I've had a similar version with the spicy/custom flavor in the gravy. The boyfriend definitely approved and i will be making this again!
It's awesome! And tastes just like my husband's grandmother's :)
I followed the recipe as written except I used Jimmy Dean Maple Sausage - so quick and easy and tastes awesome. Definately would make this again.
LOVE this recipe! I use it any time we have company and everyone loves it. I recommend adding a little more milk... it tends to be too thick. I've also used fat free half and half or whipping cream... whatever I have on hand. I also use maple flavored sausage... yummy!
Pretty tasty, but I found it to be to thick so I added an extra cup of milk and some house hold seasoning for a more tasty creamy gravy. Worked great with my biscuits for breakfast this morning.
wonderful! although it's a bit sausage-heavy (which isn't necessarily a bad thing.)
perfect every time. The best sausage gravy, hands down! I always use Bob Evan's original recipe!
Remove Sausage After Cooked. Add 3 Tablespoons Butter.Add Flour. Gradually Add 3 Cups Milk. Add Sausage.Cook 10-15 Minutes. Salt And Pepper Individually.
Delicious! My husband and I just made some this morning. It is incredibly easy to make and tastes great!
I used Turkey sausage, and Skim Milk.. It turned out great!!! My family loved it!! Will make again
Turned out easy and delicious. I used maple flavored sausage, it's our favorite. The only problem is that we like alot more gravy for that much sausage. Next time I might try doubling the flour/milk to get more gravy.
I was truly disappointed with the lack of flavor i will never make this again :( I'm going to experiment with some butter and chicken bouillon next time..
Simple and amazing. I used a different name brand sausage. I was considering adding more seasoning to the sausage after I tasted it once it was browned. Seems a little bland. I held off and added the flour and milk - WOW. Not sure what happened but the flavor really jumped out. This was fantastic.
Holy... LORD! Ever since I was little, there was this tiny breakfast house in Lake Tahoe that my pop would take me to for breakfast right before school time. This place had the world's greatest biscuts and gravy ever known to man... Well I live in the bay area now and have never had any luck finding primo biscut and gravy breakfast... until I found this recipe! It's so simple and thick and amazing!! I make this all the time for my family! Thank you for sharing this! note: it's all about the sausage you pick so choose wisely because it can really make the flavor what it is... but this is good stuff and makes a lot :)
I made this for my worship team at my church and got nothing but great reviews the only advice i would give is that if you make a larger recipe allow a long time for the milk to thinken or maybe heat up the milk before you add it into the sausage.
