Reviews for Red Garlic Mashed Potatoes
I'm only giving 3 stars because if you add the sugar it will ruin the dish. There's no need to add 1/2 cup of butter either. I used 1/4 cup and added extra garlic powder. It was a good base recipe. If you don't have half & half you can just use warm milk. It will work just as well. Delicious served with Ina Gardens engagement chicken. It's a must try!
I cut the root end off a head of garlic, drizzle with olive oil and salt and pepper. Roast in a 320 degree oven for a half hour. Then I squeeze the garlic out of the husks mash good with a fork and add to potatoes with butter salt and pepper and sour cream. That is all you need to know about potatoes. No Sugar
Great flavour... I agree with a lot of people on here to half the sugar content.
I left out the sugar and used skim milk and they came out great. Served with garlic chicken fried chicken and country gravy. They went very well together.
We love cheese so of course I added cheddar cheese. Left out the sugar. Really good with Butterfly Honey Pork Fillets. Thanks!
These got rave reviews at Christmas from everyone--didn't have enough to make sure everyone had as much as they wanted! These were really, really good. I used minced garlic from a jar instead of crushed, but that's the only change I made.
I am preparing to make these for a second time per my girlfriends request. So, yes they are that good. I like every one else eighty-sixed the sugar.
We made these potatoes with a chicken dish. Thought they would have been a nice side if you were grilling! Good dish, though!
These were very sweet. I tried adding ALOT more salt. That barely helped. Then I added more steak seasoning which made it even worse.
I thought these potatoes were very good! As noted by others, I did not add the sugar (seems unnatural and unnecessary!) I did add 4 cloves of garlic into the pot while cooking the potatoes. I topped off the serving dish with fresh parsley and the potatoes tasted and looked wonderful!
as others mentioned, I omitted the sugar. I loved the idea of boiling the potatoes and the garlic together! I mashed and then whipped the potatoes to make them extra creamy. I will definitely use this recipe again.
We made these for thanksgiving and it was such a huge hit we are doing them for christmas as well. Thanks!!
they were very good I used the olad steam and mash potato.
I loved everything about this recipe, it was a great addition to our steak night.
these were good, but don't add sugar! If you don't add sugar, cut down on the garlic.
You don't need any gravy with these spuds!!! I made them for a preschool Thanksgiving potluck, so I added 1 teaspoon of crushed garlic to the cooking water, omitted the sugar (they are delicious enough without) and PRESTO! A big hit!
Thanks to the reviews I DID NOT add sugar. Instead of using half and half I used heavy cream for a more creamy taste and was even easier when whipping it all together. Also, I did not add the crushed garlic since personally I thought the powder garlic was just enough. Overall, was very tasty!!
I prefer a little less sugar than recommened, but otherwise it is great.
This seemed a little overly sweet. I'll use less sugar next time.
I made this last night for my family and they loved it. Thanks for the recipe! Will be making this again!
This recipe is pretty quick and simple. However, I found that it could have used a little more garlic and some salt. My hisband gave it 2 thumbs up.
They really are crazy addictive. YUM. Seriously.
Melt in your mouth potatoes!
these were not bad but not the best I've had either...could have used some extra salt I think and def. don't add the sugar. i didn't put sugar and these potatoes were still pretty sweet.
This was different and I am glad I tried them but we did not like the addition of sugar. I seldom peel potatoes of any kind so didn't with this recipe. We had quite a bit left over and I didn't want it all to go to waste so the next evening I added a bit of sour cream, green onions and shredded sharp cheddar cheese; formed into patties, coated with panko bread crumbs and pan fried them. Obviously less sugar taste and turned out pretty good and I was proud to not have wasted.
No where near enough liquid. They made a good potato puff & shepherd pie though! Absolutely left out the sugar.
They're good-- but like nearly every other review, leave out the sugar! I added some (sorry, I'm not an exact cook-- a couple dollops?) cream cheese which achieved extra creaminess and added a bit of the "sweet" that the original cook was going for with the sugar. Also, definitely (gently) heat your butter and cream (and cream cheese if you're adding it) before adding to the potatoes. Extra smashed garlic cloves in the cream and butter while heating also adds a little oomph of sweet, delicious garlic flavor. (I always like a little extra garlic). Otherwise, good base recipe.
Yum..Love it. Easy to make and very creamy and tasty
Excellent mashed potatoes. Made them for my family and are not only a staple but have been promoted to the Thanksgiving menu!
Very yummy! My family and I made a giant batch so I had to add the half and half and steak seasoning according to texture and taste. I garnished this with rosemary, paprika and black pepper. It's delish! Can't wait to pair it up with the turkey!!!!!
Delicious! Skipped the sugar and forgot the steak seasoning so I guess I can't give a true review... and added chives!
Recipe was very good, did not use the sugar and did not miss it. Maybe could use a touch of salt.
Very good!!! I used steak sauce instead of steak seasoning. Otherwise, followed the recipe exactly. Very good!!!
These were really tasty. I'm not sure if they were supposed to be peeled or not, and my mother-in-law did peel them.
I followed the advice from others and didnt add any sugar. I didnt have any half and half so i used milk. One of the best mashed potatoes I've eaten. Love the flavor. Definitely will make again.
I tried this recipe with meatloaf and it was amazing. Excellent!
These were pretty decent mashed potatoes. I quadrupled the garlic. (I just can't help myself!) And, I doubled the recipe for left overs -- mashed potatoes freeze quite well (and the frozen left overs can be used to make mashed potato based casseroles, fried mashed potato patties, etc.).
If you're serving these potatoes with something salty, add the sugar, and it makes a nice change for the palate... otherwise delete the sugar. Either way, you'll have a hit on your hands.
I do like this recipe the way it is, but I leave out the steak seasoning and sugar (daughter w/diabetes). The first time I had mashed red potatoes was at Xaviers at the Four Points Sheraton. They leave part of the peels in, in small sizes and I loved it. So I scrub the spuds with a pot-like scrubber and leave even more of the peels in minus any dark spots. I've never switched back to Russets since. Sometimes, I'll grate some cheese on top and briefly put it under the broiler. This works just as well with golden potatoes. Go with what you like.
I cooked this for Thanksgiving and it came out great. kudos to whoever suggested cooking the garlic pieces with the potatoes so they would mash up easier. Also I wanted a slightly crisper coating and better appearance so I spooned these into a foil pan, brushed lightly with a little melted butter and put under the broiler for maybe 5 minutes. Delicious!
Perfect recipe. Very flavorful. I would have never thought of adding steak seasoning or sugar! Hubby loved it so much he had thirds. Will be making again.
I left out the sugar entirely and while they were good, I've had so much better.
I still prefer my regular mashed potato recipe over this one but my mashed potato loving kids did like this one.
These were absolutely, hands-down, with a doubt the BEST mashed potatoes I have ever tasted. My family went crazy over this recipe and we were all literally 'fighting' to see who would get the leftovers! LOL Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I'm now passing it on to my outside family members to try also. Shawnah, you weren't kidding when you said these were addictive! Wow! I don't know that I ever want mashed potatoes any other way now! =:o)
DO NOT ADD SUGAR!!! This is a great recipe, but if you add the sugar, you'll be very disappointed.
I did not care for this recipe. I will NEVER ever deviate from my own recipes on a holiday again!
This was the first time I made mashed potatoes that I really really liked!!! I didn't want to use powder garlic - so while the potatoes were cooking I did up a simple garlic butter w/ a few tbsp of butter and about 2 tbsp of minced garlic, cooked on med low in a small pot. After it had cooked the garlic a little bit I added my seasonings - a little bit of the sugar that the recipe called for and my substituted italian seasonings (instead of the steak seasoning). I put the garlic butter in the potatoes at the same time as the rest of my butter. Didn't have half n half, so I used heavy whipping cream instead. Absolutely fantastic and cannot wait to make again!
No sugar, then an A!
Nice change to pain mashed potatoes.
Great recipe. I used 1/2 the amount of butter called for and did not have steak seasoning so I added a little Lawry seasoning salt. No sugar is needed. Will be making my potatoes this way alot, flavorful.
Very good. I omitted the sugar and added another 1/4 c of reg milk because I found it to stiff. I guess it depends on the size of your potatoes huh?
My husband and I used this mashed potato recipe when we cooked our first Thanksgiving meal together...they are absolutely delicious!
I used a bit less butter and also subbed the cream for almond milk. I, too, boiled the crushed garlic cloves in the water, just easier. These were really good, kid and hubby approved.
These were good, but still needed more garlic and salt to actually be called garlic mashed potatoes. I went with what other people said and didn't even try adding the sugar.
I increased the cooking time and added more cheese. Very good.
Oh so good! I used jarred minced garlic, and followed recipe exactly using milk instead of cream. SOOO good.. I used with crab stuffed filet mignon and the sauce from that recipe over the potatoes was heavenly. I can't wait to try with real roasted garlic and a handful of fresh parmesan cheese.
These were wonderful! I did omit the sugar and added 1/2 tsp of the steak seasoning and a little extra garlic. My husband just raved about them. We will be making them again tonight!
These were ok... Not my favorite mashed potatoes. The garlic was just too strong and my younger daughters could not handle it. Also, do not add the sugar!
I debated about 3 or 4 stars. Everyone commented how good they were, however, I was not satisfied. The sugar should have been left out. It was just too sweet for me.
Delicious! My husband told me these were the best mashed potatoes I've ever made. I left out the sugar and garlic powder as I just didn't think they were needed. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe, it will become a staple in my home!
Great fluffy garlic mashed potatoes. My only disagreement was with the sugar. Maybe a little more garlic with salt and pepper and NO sugar. Other than that, this is a good recipe.
Delish! Easy! Mmmm! Definitely making them again! I actually used more garlic than called for and I used cream (that's all I had) and added salt and fresh ground pepper. Turned out great!
I didnt use and sugar as other suggested. I also added half a pound of cooked and cut up bacon.
Very good dish, best mashed potatoes I have had for a long time
I boiled the potatoes , threw garlic cloves in the water with them. When I mashed them I used a cup of light sour cream, garlic salt and milk. Yum I also used a little ranch powder
Oh yeah, these were awesome!
They were wonderful! I did have to sub a couple of things.. didn't have any red taters so used baking instead and didn't have any butter so used light mayo. VERY delicious!!!
I make this recipe all the time... and our family loves it! I make this in the food processor, which results in a lovely, creamy mashed potato! I too omit the sugar as well as the steak sauce, and I add minced onion & extra garlic. It's an awesome side dish to most meats... esp. steak!! Delicious!
Didn't use the sugar, cuz I didn't find it necessary. Very yummy :)
love these!! I left out the sugar.
Why did I not read the review before making this?? Sugar is definitely not supposed to be in there.
This is a great recipe. I did make a few changes: used milk instead of cream, cut the butter down a little bit, and omitted the sugar. I think it's key to avoid overcooking the cubed red potatoes, so they don't end up too watery/mushy. Also use a good steak seasoning that's not too overpowering. I use Emeril's all natural steak rub, and get better flavor results with that then my Penzey's chicago-style steak seasoning. I also don't bother using a blender at the end, since I like to keep the texture of the red potato skin intact. This is a really good place to start if you want to make restaurant style creamy garlic mashed potatoes.
Phenomenal! This is the best mashed potato dish I have ever had. I love the sweetness that the sugar and cream give to the potatoes. This is especially great w/ a spicy dish such as the "Chipotle Crusted Pork Tenderloin". Top it off w/ a nice cold stout or porter and you have my last meal request. My family absolutely love this dish and we keep this always ready for parties and potlucks.
I am trying to figure what I did wrong when making these potatoes, when everyone else on this site seemed to love them! I made them exactly according to the recipe, except that I omitted the sugar. I will say that the half cup, i.e., entire stick of butter, made them taste greasy and heavy. They basically tasted like heavy, greasy, garlicky potato paste. I also couldn't taste the steak seasoning -- should have added more, and I had to add a lot of salt to balance out the garlic. I made them for Easter and it was sort of embarassing because no one in my family seemed to like them either. :(
For me, the original recipe required a few modifications to be flavored: salt and 1/4 teaspoon more of garlic powder. Even without using a machine, the creamy consistency came out well. I did it by hand, and it wasn't too chunky to be flavorless or too creamy as to lose the heartiness that I believe mashed potatoes should have. Good recipe overall, but it needs the salt!
My husband said it was too sweet with the sugar, but I enjoyed the flavor with it. Yummy.
Didn't change the recipe at all and my husband loved it. We will be making again.
I can cook pretty much anything with much success. For whatever reason I never had luck with Mashed Potatoes that didn' come in a box......until this recipe.....I LOVE IT and it came out perfect. I have come up with other things to add to kick it up a bit. This was very easy and you can never go wrong when garlic is involved. The one thing I did not use was the sugar.
It was VERY good. I made it last night with macaroni and cheese and fried chicken. I would, however, skip the sugar. I did not like the little taste of sweetness in it. I would stay exactly with the recipe, but lose the sugar.
I made these for our early Thanksgiving yesterday, and I was disappointed. Nobody commented on them, and they always commented on my own recipe. I don't know what I did wrong, but too much garlic flavor and just didn't taste like good southern home cooking.
These were very good, except for the taste of the sugar. I could not understand why it was in there, but I followed the recipe. Next time I will leave the sugar out.
Very good recipe. I followed the recipe exactly and everyone liked it but we all agreed that it would be better without the sugar. I personally would increase the garlic too but I like a lot more garlic than most.
I thought these were great, though I didn't use sugar. The steak seasoning gave it nice flavor.
I made this with meatloaf and green beans... Delicious :)
Yum Yum Yum! These go great with Hamburger Steak and Gravy! Add some salt and these are perfect!
I agree with others to put the garlic in the water as well as the in the potatoes. My family and I weren't too crazy about the sugar in the potatoes, so I think I'll leave that out next time.
Liked this a lot. It has a grilled/smokey taste to it, but probably because of the steak seasoning I used. I only tweaked a couple things. I didn't use sugar, and I added a bit more steak seasoning and half and half. That's it. So easy, amd it turned out great!
Yummy! The best mashed potatoes. No need to add any extra butter or anything once they are made! Just scoop and eat
Really good potatoes. Didn't have Steak seasoning, so I used Season Salt. I also boiled a whole clove of garlic with the potatoes and mashed it up with them. Omitted the sugar, as suggested.
I also opted to not add sugar and used regular milk instead of cream but it was fantastic :)
I made this with a chicken dish. My husband LOVED it! :)
These were so easy and quick to throw together. My entire family of picky eaters loved it. I didn't put sugar in, it has a slight natural sweetness on it's own. I definitely recommend these to anyone!
I have made this recipe two times...to the cheers of my family...delish!
I didn't add sugar, as I believe I had made this recipe before and it completely ruined it, gross. But I made it again and it was really plain! Hmm I would say add sour cream and maybe let some cheddar cheese melt in it for extra flavor? Also add A LOT of salt it was really bland, I also recommend adding lots of garlic power to it as well. On top of all that maybe saute the garlic before adding it into the potatoes. Not sure how some things on here get so many 5 star ratings ?
I added extra garlic and steak seasoning, plus some leftover chives. The potatoes were yummy but not my favorite. My boyfriend insisted on a 4 but he's a potato lover. :)
This is a great recipe. I will make it often.
