Red Garlic Mashed Potatoes
These red-skinned mashed potatoes are just the creamiest. They are always a hit with company. Just a warning: they are addictive!

Oh my gosh! these were amazing! The best mashed potatoes i have ever had. I just made a few changes because some things i didn't have. I did not use any sugar because I am not big on sweet. While boiling I used 1 tsp of garlic powder and 1 tsp of garlic salt. I also added a pinch of salt and pinch of ground pepper. Then when i was mashing the potatoes i added 2 tsp of garlic salt, 1 tsp of garlic powder, and 1 tsp of the steak seasonings. Then to make it pretty I added a few shakes of parsley. I made gravy with these and they didn't even need it at all! If you like your potatoes very flavorful this is the way to go. My picky roommates DEVOURED them. Thanks for the awesome idea :)Read More
I made this last night and was very disappointed, unfortunately. The sugar ruined the whole dish in my (and my family's) opinion. In fact, my sister and I sampled the potatoes before I added any ingredients (just the boiled potatoes, to which I added salt) and we thought they were delicious. Once I added the rest of the ingredients I regretted it. I would make them again with 2X the liquid, using milk instead of half and half, and not quite so much butter and omit the sugar completely. Gotta give props to the rest of your dinner menu, though. I made the meatloaf and green beans - they were a hit! I think I will adopt the meatloaf recipe as my own. I hate meatloaf (unfortunately I'm the only one in my family) and this one was devoured by everyone including me! The Peach cobbler didn't turn out - but then again, baking has never been my fortè.Read More

To make it a little easire, i crush several cloves of garlic and add to the cooking water with the potatoes..when done, drain and mash all together...the garlic will be tender & sweet and it's all right there...Also, I heat the butter and cream some before adding to the mashed potatoes.
I love these potatoes! Only changes...I omit the sugar add 2 tsp garlic to the potatoes/cooking water, and then also GENTLY warm my half and half with 2 additional tsp minced garlic before adding it to the potato mixture. This is one of those recipes I make over and over again!
I love garlic and these were delish! I forgot to dice the potatoes before cooking (didn't matter in the end), I also added all of the crushed garlic to the boiling water to make it easier to mash with the potatoes. I didn't add the sugar but did add a bit of salt and used milk instead of the cream. No need for gravy for these spuds!
Absolutely awesome. Made the recipe exactly as stated, except I used heavy cream instead of half and half, and I omitted the sugar. Phenomenal!
The best mashed potatoes I've ever had!!! But BEWARE, and only put in 1 tablespoon of sugar.
I have tried several recipes for mashed potatoes from this site and they all came out kind of bland. These are PHENOMENAL!! I followed the advice of another reviewer and added 1 tsp of garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder and 1/8 tsp of black pepper to the water when the potatoes were boiling. While mashing the potatoes, I added 2tsp garlic powder, 2 tsp onion powder, 2tsp steak seasoning and 1/2 tsp parsley. Oh, yeah, left out the sugar, and mashed the potatoes with a fork instead because my husband and I like them kind of chunky. I also left the skins on.
Since I saw the reviews that said this was a little sweet I reduced the sugar by half. I also added more garlic. We really liked this. I don't think this will be our "all the time" recipe, but it is good for a change. Thanks for the post.
Excellent. Measured butter and seasonings to taste and eliminated the (unnecessay and distracting) sugar altogether. Just used a hand masher rather than an electric mixer. Adding more ingredients and using more gadgets doesn't necessarily make it better, as evidenced in this case. Really delicious mashed potatoes; a fine contribution to my "Homemade TV Dinner," along with "Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy," recipes also from this site.
Very Good. Just don't add the sugar.
These are the best homemade mashed potatoes I've ever had. Served these during Christmas dinner and people could not stop with the seconds, thirds, fourths! Changes I made are adding 2 smashed cloves of garlic in the boiling water and then mashing it with the potatoes afterward, using milk instead of half and half, omitting the sugar, adding 1 teaspoon of steak seasoning, and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. I also kept the skins on, and just mashed it for a chunky mash. Delicious, restaurant like mashed potatoes!
Wish I would've read the reviews before I made these. The sugar ruins the recipe. I think they would've been great if I had left it out. Also had to add more cream.
I made these last night when I cooked for my boyfriend's parents for the first time. Left out the sugar and made sure to add garlic to the potato water. They were wonderful. His mother went back for seconds -- she doesn't do that with her own potatoes!!
It was my first time making these. There was two of us-I used 6 red potatoes (we like leftovers), cut them in half, boiled them until tender w/a fork. I also put 3 cut-up garlic cloves, salt and pepper in the water. I drained them then used the potato masher to mash them before using the mixer. In the bowl I put in butter, skim milk, 2 tsp garlic salt, 1 tsp garlic powder, pepper, and 1tsp montreal steak seasoning. I mixed together until finished. Next time I'll use only 1 tsp garlic salt as it was a little salty. I never tried using the sugar since reading the reviews. I'll for sure make this again.
Very good!!! Thank you...
so good! i only had half of the cream called for so i subbed 2% milk and it was fine. these were good with hamburger steaks, green beans, coleslaw and cornbread. awesome. awesome.
Omitted the sugar, needed more milk than the recipe called for and added extra garlic but this recipe is basically very good and a keeper! Thanks for sharing.
Very good, did not add the sugar or the garlic powder but added extra garlic cloves to the water. Also only used 1/4 of butter, and skim milk instead of half and half. I would make these again.
These were great! But I did follow others advice and only added about a tsp of sugar instead of the 2tbsp. Everyone loved them!
The only thing I am complaining about in this recipe is the raw garlic. I don't mind raw garlic I just didn't care for it in potatoes. My younger kid wouldn't eat them after one bite, but that was understandable. Anyway, great potatoes other than that!
Omit the sugar and use spicy Montreal steak seasoning.
These mashed potatoes are to die for!! Although, I did add extra salt, pepper and steak seasoning and did not add the sugar. They're super rich and creamy!
I have been making mashed potatoes all my life for a large German family. These are the best ever!! Just like salt can bring out the flavor in a recipe, sugar does the same here. Be careful to stick to the measurements and you can't go wrong.
I used a hand masher. I omitted the sugar. I only had 5/6 potatoes so I used half the butter and half the cream that is suggested here. My daughter who has never liked mashed potatoes, ate these right up! I think these will become a regular dish here!
Love these taters!! Followed the recipe with the exception of the steak seasoning and garlic powder. I did boil the potatoes with 3 cloves of garlic. I also added black pepper at the end. These will accompany so many things on our table. We really liked the sugar sweetened flavor. Mashed potato heaven :)
These were very good!! I left out the sugar, as other reviewers mentioned doing. To cut down the calories, I also cut the butter in half and omitted the half-and-half, and used 1/2 cup of plain fat-free yogurt instead (next time I might use 3/4-1 cup of yogurt). The tangyness of the yogurt worked really well with the garlic in the potatoes. With these changes, I think these will be my go-to mashed potatoes from now on. I also didn't have any steak seasoning, so I left that out.
I don't understand why folks are reviewing this recipe so highly after omitting the sugar. The sugar is the reason I am rating this poorly, as I did in fact make it as written. The steak seasoning flavor was non existent in my dish, and the garlic/sugar mixed like oil and water. There was no flavor fusion here, just different flavors trying to out do each other. Sadly, this was an epic fail for me.
dont add sugar..totally unnecessary..everything else great..left potatoes whole..throw garlic in AFTER boiling potatoes just before mashing. steak seasoning is just about taste. I liked without. try with or without..leave potatoes chunky=rustic..everyone loved them,,1/2 & 1/2 is all about richness..good without... excellent with but hard to tell if added or not
very good! I left out the sugar as others suggested.
The sugar was just too much. It's not that hard to make simple garlic mashed, but when I saw this recipe and the ratings I assumed it was extra good. The sugar made it way too sweet. Find another recipe or omit the sugar.
Amazing!!!! I didn't add sugar though. We loved this and are about to make it again!
Wow, these are awesome. Only used a little sugar. Really didn't need it
I didn't add the sugar because of what other had wrote. This was excellent everyone had seconds will make again.
These came out awesome! The best mashed potatoes that I have ever made! Thanks :)
Used milk and butter, left out the sugar. I didn't think the sugar would add anything postive to the dish. Used Lawrys instead of steak seasoning as I didn't want chunks of seasoning in the potatoes. Pretty good.
2 things I learned with this recipe: adding crushed garlic to the boiling water of the potatoes really infuses the flavor perfectly! The other thing I learned is that sugar should never touch mashed potatoes.
I will never use another mashed
Skipped the sugar. Added salt, Parmesan cheese and onion powder and halved the butter. Sooo good. The steak seasoning was a great addition. Will make again and again I am sure!
I cut out the steak seasoning (because I didn't have it) and the sugar (following the advice of other reviewers). I also used evaporated milk instead of half and half, and it turned out fine. I also used 3 good sized garlic cloves and chopped them up. Put one of the chopped garlic cloves to boil with the potatoes and used the other two chopped cloves with the mashed potatoes. And since I needed the beaters for beating whipped cream, I mashed my potatoes in a food processor. It stayed a little lumpy, just the way I like it.
I made these for thanksgiving. It was my first time ever making red garlic potatoes And they were delicious And Easy
I added 1/2 tsp parsley, 1 tsp onion powder, 1tsp garlic powder, 1tsp steak seasoning... I halved the butter... I left sugar.... I crushed 4 garlic cloves and added to the water....
Very Good! If you like your mashed potatoes sweeter, use all the sugar, but only use half if your not a fan of sweet potatoes.:)
This is great! I didn't add the sugar based on others' reviews and my own preference. These are the best-- and boiling the potatoes with the garlic is the difference maker. Thanks for the recipe!
I have to agree with the other reviewers. Leave out the sugar! I have no idea why it is a part of the recipe. Otherwise these potatoes are excellent. That little bit of steak seasoning adds to the flavor!
I made this recipe without reading the reviews. Which I should have. Most reviewers are saying do not add the sugar. Man, were they right. I will make them again, this time sans sugar. Great taste overall but without the sugar and more salt, maybe even a tad more garlic/garlic powder they will get 5 stars!!!
Omitted sugar & added more garlic. Very good!
No sugar, add salt and pepper to taste.
Boiling the garlic with the potatoes was the secret and had seen this on the food show. These were so creamy and delicious! Gravy Not Necessary : ) We love garlic, so we replaced the garlic powder with (2) roasted cloves and did not add sugar. This will definitely be a side-dish for Thanksgiving!!
left out the sugar.
Sugar is the secret ingredient. Everyone loved, although they couldnt quite put their finger on what made this dish different. Yummy!
Flat out easy & delicious. I added 1/2 & !/2 when mashing, along with butter, salt & pepper. YUM!
So good and so easy to make! I did not add sugar...who adds sugar to mashed potatoes? eww! Next time I make it I will double the amount of crushed garlic and garlic powder.
If you want sweetish potatoes use Yukon Gold but don't add sugar to mashed potatoes.
DO NOT ADD SUGAR!!! Not a pinch. These would have been perfect with out the sugar.
I only gave 4 stars because I feel like the sugar measurement is off. These are very good, but only require 1 tsp sugar. I also never measure my half and half exactly, just splash in enough until the mixture is creamy.
I really really REALLY enjoyed these. As did my family. I think next time though, I will cut the sugar.
Good, and will make again with some modifications. I will skip the sugar, and add some salt. I doubled the garlic because I didn't feel like it was garlicky enough. Also used milk in place of half and half, and used a little more than 1/4 cup to get the right consistency.
This recipe goes over well here at my house! Everyone loves the potatoes! I used minced garlic once but the kids kept finding it in the potatoes so I now I just put a few slightly chopped pieces of garlic into the water while boiling then remove before I mash them. I season with freshly ground pepper and garlic salt.
Turned out well, but nothing special...
Really great potatoes and easy, no need for gravy. I used whole milk instead of cream cause that's what I had and no sugar.
Absolutely delicious!!! As other reviewers suggested, I omitted the sugar. Since I didn't have half and half, I used milk instead and it was still wonderful! Yum yum...Will make again...
Wow. This was sweet. Not what I was expecting from mashed potatoes but it complimented the meal perfectly. Served with Tantalizingly Tangy Meatloaf and Bella's Brussels Spouts with Bacon.
heavenly, nothing more to add! ;)
without sugar, 5 stars!
My family thought they were resturant quality!! I added the sugar and garlic to the boiling water.
I did not like this recipe at all. I used half of the butter recommended in the recipe and used milk in place of the cream and omitted the sugar as mentioned by others. Mine turned out very thin and almost sticky. The flavor was lacking as well. I'll stick to my baked whipped & mashed potatoes that always seem to be a hit.
Great recipe, but since we don't enjoy anything sweet with a meal, didn't even consider adding the sugar. The potatoes were absolutely great without it! I did however, add a bit more garlic.
I know that I really should have read the reviews and I usually do - but the sugar just killed it for me and most of my family but I must admit that a couple of the kids liked them. Personal taste preference applies here.
Loved this recipe. I must say, however, I would skip the sugar. In my opinion, as well as the rest of my family, it was better without. The sugar makes the potatoes too sweet. I made this for Christmas dinner last year, and ended up having to make another batch because no one liked the batch with sugar in it.
These had a nice flavor. I didn't add garlic to potato water, just pressed about 2 teaspoons worth before mashing. Only added about half (a little less than half) the amount of sugar. Added salt. Will be making these again. The flavor is going to vary somewhat, I think, depending on which brand of steak seasoning you use (I used Famous Dave's).
Very Good !!! Will make them again and again. My wife loved them
Wow - first reviewer of this recipe so I will try to be kind! It was really sweet - sort of weird with the garlic...my family politely said it was good, but never reached for seconds. Oh well, maybe some will find a sweet red mashed potatoes tasty - enjoy!!!!
The family loved this! I even used lite "I can't believe it's not butter" and it was still very good!
Great flavor when you add garlic pepper and steak seasoning.
I love this recipe and have been making it for years. Replace the sugar with salt (use common sense).
I have been making these for a few years now! They are fantastic! I always skip the sugar. These are the best!!!
very tasty, I did not add the milk, no need for it.
These were good but nothing special. We didn't taste much difference in the mashed potatoes I always make.
Only rated a 4 because I modified the recipe. I omitted the sugar completely and used milk instead of cream because that is what I had on hand. It was DELICIOUS!! The boyfriend loved them and I served them along with "The Best Meatloaf" recipe from this site. It was a fantastic dinner and made for great leftovers! Will definitely make both again.
AWESOME recipe but nix the sugar and steak seasoning. Otherwise we use it for every time we eat potatoes.
Made for Christmas diner and they turned out great! Everyone including my picky husband and dad loved them!! Instead of half and half I used milk, eye measured, and went with another reviewer and didn't add the sugar, yummy!
Easy to make and a nice twist on mashed potatoes. However, I found it a little too sweet. I'll make this recipe again, but I'm definitely going to cut down on the amount of sugar used.
Great recipe. I used the heavy cream and left out the sugar, as I found several reviews omiting the sugar. After doing so, I would agree and will continue to omit the sugar. It really isnt necessary.
Great but I added more garlic because my boyfriend and I love garlic! Thanks for the recipe!
all you can taste is the sugar.....
As per others' suggestions i left out the sugar, used 1 tsp steak seasoning, 1 tsp garlic power and 1 tsp onion powder an used milk instead of cream EXCELLENT!
This recipe is good. I omitted the sugar!
These are the perfect side-dish for a steak dinner. Per other reviewers, I skipped the sugar.
If you leave out the sugar these mashed potatoes will definitely become the best you’ve ever had. Next time I’ll add more butter & half-and-half to make them a little (more) creamier.
Really good! Boiled the garlic cloves (5) with the potatoes, then crushed them together. No sugar.
awesome....taste just like the restaurant kind. I left out the sugar, but that was because sugar and mashed potatoes just don't go. You have to use real butter....makes all the diference.
Very good and easy to make. I added extra garlic and my family loved it! Will definitely make this dish again!
Everyone enjoyed them. Though I don't think I would put the sugar in next time.
I was really excited to try this recipe and thrilled that so many people had saved it. I'm sure it would have been good, but adding the sugar totally ruined it! I had to save it by adding extra steak seasoning, and still it just tasted really weird. I'm not quite sure why the sugar was added.
YUM!!! We loved these potatoes...the only thing we didn't do was add a lot of sugar. I added a pinchful and I also added a little more cream to make it creamier! Our family enjoyed it thoroughly!
I'm only giving 3 stars because if you add the sugar it will ruin the dish. There's no need to add 1/2 cup of butter either. I used 1/4 cup and added extra garlic powder. It was a good base recipe. If you don't have half & half you can just use warm milk. It will work just as well. Delicious served with Ina Gardens engagement chicken. It's a must try!
