Apple Dumplings with Crescent Roll Dough

I received a similar recipe from my grandmother many years ago and this is a customized version of her dumplings. These apples dumplings are so quick and simple to make but taste like you slaved in the kitchen. Any home cook can make these regardless of experience. These dumplings smell and taste superb and paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, they are like heaven.

Ingredients

  • 1 large red apple

  • ½ cup water

  • cup white sugar

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 1 (8 ounce) package refrigerated crescent rolls

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Peel and core apple, then cut into 8 slices.

  2. Combine water, white sugar, and butter in a saucepan over medium heat; stir regularly and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat.

  3. Unroll crescent dough into 8 pieces. Wrap each piece around an apple slice and transfer to a 9-inch square baking dish. Slowly pour sugar water over the dumplings.

  4. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl until combined. Sprinkle over the dumplings.

  5. Bake in the preheated oven until puffed and golden brown, about 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and spoon hot sugar mixture over the dumplings to glaze them. Serve warm.

Cook's Notes:

I prefer to use a Gala or Red Delicious apple. You can use margarine in place of butter.

You can create a lighter version of this recipe by substituting the crescent rolls and butter for reduced fat as well as reducing the brown sugar to 1 tablespoon. In addition, you can substitute the sugar for Splenda(R) or any other sugar substitute.
