Ingredients

  • ½ pound bacon, cut into small pieces

  • 1 pound lean ground beef

  • 1 pound ground pork sausage

  • 2 small yellow bell peppers, chopped

  • 2 small red bell peppers, chopped

  • 2 small Medjool dates, pitted and finely chopped

  • 3 small serrano peppers, chopped

  • ½ cup chopped onion

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • 1 (24 ounce) jar marinara sauce

  • 1 (16 ounce) can mild chili beans

  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can chicken broth

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Place bacon in a Dutch oven and cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until evenly browned, 7 to 10 minutes. Remove bacon to a paper-towel lined plate and drain most of the grease from the pan.

  2. Brown ground beef and sausage in the remaining bacon grease. Add bell peppers, serrano peppers, onion, and garlic. Add bacon and cook until meat and sausage are browned and peppers are tender, 7 to 10 minutes.

  3. Add marinara sauce, chili beans, chicken broth, water, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, for at least 1 hour.
