Make this quick and easy BBQ chicken breast in the oven for those times when you want a good meal but don't feel like fussing. Nuke a few potatoes for baked, steam some fresh broccoli or saute some green beans, and you got dinner in about an hour.

Directions

Instructions Checklist
  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking pan with heavy-duty foil to make cleanup easier.

  • Prepare chicken breasts by cutting off the rib meat if you wish and rinse and pat dry. Leave the skin on. Season chicken with salt and pepper and put in the pan.

  • Bake in the preheated oven until juices start to appear, about 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Remove the pan and generously pour 1/2 of the barbecue sauce over chicken. Continue to bake for 20 minutes. Repeat with remaining barbecue sauce and cook until no longer pink in the centers and skin is crispy, 15 to 20 minutes more.

Cook's Notes:

The times given are for my oven settings. Times and temperature can vary from oven to oven so adjust accordingly. Can also be grilled but you have to attend to them and add sauce more often = more work.

You can use boneless breasts also but they have a tendency to turn out dry. Adjust cooking times if you do.

You can use any prepared or homemade BBQ sauce you prefer.

This was certainly easy! As suggested, you will have to adjust the time based on the size of your chicken breasts. Mine were on the small-medium side, so I did 30 minutes total. I roasted the breasts initially for 10 minutes, then added the sauce and continued cooking for another 20. I didn't find any reason to add the sauce on twice. This will only be as good as the sauce you use, so use one you love! I used my homemade maple whiskey BBQ sauce. Next time I would grill the chicken, but this turned out pretty good for the oven. Yum!!! and obviously super easy!!! We brined first with garlic cloves, cayenne, bay leaves and baked with the garlic cloves on the chicken and used Rufus Teague BBQ. And balsamic bacon reduction sauteed asparagus. Read More

I don't know what the one star reviewers are bellyaching about. I appreciate the directions for cooking the chicken. We like the sauce but had always put it on later and now I will just put it on in the oven. Less mess if you ask me. I also can see the potential for using other sauces or "basting" type recipes. It is the "method" that I was looking for. Read More

Thanks, Grumpy Grandpa. It was too windy to grill, so I needed guidance re: oven temp and timing. Your recipe was so helpful and tasty. I cut the large bone-in breasts in half with kitchen shears. I followed temperature guidance, but needed less time in oven. I used my favorite sauce. Would only add to check temp (165) with meat thermometer. Read More

Not everyone is an experienced cook and this would be a helpful starter for a novice. I make something similar all the time adding a sliced onion, garlic and whatever else I fancy. Read More

Wow. Two of the three reviews before mine here gave one star because it was their opinions that this wasn't a "recipe", (which, in fact, it is, according to Webster.) Reviews are supposed to be your evaluation of the dish after you make it according to the directions. This is ALLrecipes...easy and complicated. A brand new cook may find this helpful. These very simple common sense meals that we sometimes forget about are great for every day dinners. Save the 30-step, 50 ingredient recipes for special occasions. I'm giving this 5 stars because it is easy, quick, and tastes good. Read More
