This cheeseburger casserole was my favorite dish my mom made while I was growing up, and now it is my husband's favorite. With crisp Tater Tots® and ooey-gooey Cheddar cheese, how can you go wrong?

Instructions Checklist
  • Place onion in a microwave-safe bowl and cover with water. Microwave on High until soft, 7 to 8 minutes. Drain.

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.

  • Cook and stir ground beef in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and discard grease.

  • Transfer beef to the prepared casserole dish and spread onion pieces evenly over top. Spread soup over the onions and sprinkle Cheddar cheese evenly over soup. Layer frozen potato nuggets in rows on top of the cheese.

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Lightly spray the potato nuggets with cooking spray, and bake until cooked through and crunchy, about 10 minutes more.

Cook's Notes:

If you like a very strong onion flavor, keep the onions raw when placing them into the casserole.

The casserole is prettiest when you lay one row of horizontal Tater Tots(R) and then one row of vertical Tater Tots(R), and continue that pattern all the way across the casserole.

You don't have to bake this immediately. This dish does very well making it ahead of time and refrigerating it overnight. When you are ready to serve it, just pull it out and bake it for the recommended 30 minutes.

I made this and everyone in the family loved it except my son who isn't fond of the tater tots...I didn't cook my hamburger meat first, I layed it on bottom of casserole dish, added chopped onion and red pepper, then the tater tots on top, then I mixed the cream of mushroom soup with seasonings and 1/2 can milk and poured over top, baked in oven for appx 50 minutes, turned out perfect Read More

I made this tonight. Very simple recipe yet very good tasting. I had to use a gluten free condensed soup because half my family cannot have gluten. But that is a non issue as it likely tastes the same as Campbells, who obviously does not have the resources to accommodate those among us who have celiac disease. But I digress. I take umbrage with the onions cut into 1" squares. Why? It went against everything I know from my many years of cooking. But I did it anyway. If you are going to use this recipe, and I suggest you do for a great quick meal, DICE the onions and either sauté or cook with the hamburger. Only complaint. Other wise good, quick recipe. And maybe add some cooked mixed veggies. Sorry for the 3 star but the whole onion thing is dumb. Read More
