  • Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F (260 degrees C). Grease a cast iron pan with butter.

  • Pour flour into a large mixing bowl. Cut cold butter into flour using a pastry blender until crumbly. Add buttermilk and mix well.

  • Pat out mixture on a floured surface. Cut out biscuits using a floured cutter. Place into the prepared pan with sides touching.

  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden, about 10 minutes.

10.10.20 First, used a recipe on this site to make self-rising flour. I mixed this up, dumped out onto a floured cutting board, and it was too dry, crumbly to even pat down or roll out. Back into the bowl, added more buttermilk, and then back onto the board, now good-to-go.. If you’re looking for a "light and fluffy biscuit," you may not be happy with this recipe. These biscuits are a just a bit on the dense/heavy side, but they tasted good, and worked very well with sausage gravy this morning. And cooking them in the cast iron skillet made the bottoms very crispy, almost too much so for me. Read More
