  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour 2 (9 inch) pans. In the top of a double boiler, heat chocolate, stirring occasionally, until chocolate is melted and smooth. Remove from heat and allow to cool to lukewarm. Sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat shortening until smooth. Add flour mixture, 1 cup of the milk and vanilla. Mix on low speed until flour is dampened, then beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Add eggs, remaining 1/3 cup milk and melted chocolate. Beat on medium speed for 1 minute. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool.

I was very disappointed with this cake. It was very dry and dense with little flavor. Even sweet peanut butter frosting could not save it!!! :(

This recipe was very easy and very good.My husband made this cake for my birthday,he is not a cook/baker at all!Icing we used was Italian buttercream.

It is sligtly dry and lots of iceing but over all it was alright.

The cake is very good, I used semi-sweet chocolate and a chocolate mocha frosting. I only had 1 cup of milk so it did come out a little dry maybe also because it needed more than 30 min bake ti...

I substituted cocoa for the melted chocolate and frosted it with buttercream and coconut. It turned out great.
