This chicken is good and garlicky with a hint of sweetness. The honey coating becomes rich, sticky, and crispy in the oven, but if you want to go healthier, remove the skins. This works well in the winter served hot, or make ahead and serve cold at a picnic. It's delicious right away, or for more flavor allow it to marinate over night.

Directions

Instructions Checklist
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

  • Combine orange juice, honey, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and salt together in a large bowl. Add chicken; coat thoroughly. Place chicken, skin side down, in a baking pan. Reserve the honey mixture.

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes; remove from oven. Turn chicken skin side up; baste with honey mixture. Bake, basting once, until chicken is no longer pink and an instant-read thermometer inserted near the bone reads 165 degrees F (74 degrees C), about 30 minutes.

Cook's Notes:

Chicken thighs can be substituted for chicken drumsticks.

I've used both garlic powder and 4 fresh garlic cloves, minced. It seems to have more flavor with the powder. You can also substitute a mild curry powder for the garlic powder.

If you choose to marinate the chicken, combine all of the ingredients in a large, resealable plastic bag and refrigerate for 8 hours to overnight.

Very simple and subtly delicious! Followed the recipe but I just sprinkled a little pepper on the drumsticks. Recommend covering the pan during the second half of cooking time. Read More

It was very bland even after I doubled the honey mustard and used minced jarred garlic in addition to extra powdered garlic and let it sit for a few hours. It's good for people who aren't big fans of seasoning. The sauce tasted good on my rice but the chicken was very eh. I would definitely add a lot more seasoning to this chicken. You could barely taste the orange. Maybe some zest would have helped or a real orange. I'm going to reheat tomorrow after it sits in the sauce and see if the flavor sinks in. Read More

It was edible but bland. I did not marinade it but have tasted chicken with salt and pepper that had more flavor. I squeezed a clementine instead of the orange juice and used spicy brown mustard instead of dijon. Maybe that ruined it. Read More

Easy Honey Garlic Chicken Haiku: "Not bad but not wow. Marinated all day long flavor didn't pop." I used 6 drumsticks and halved the recipe using it as a marinade as mentioned in cook's notes. Baking time was right on and the drumsticks (skinless for ours) were sticky but not particularly flavorful at all. Doubling the sauce marinating AND basting would've resulted in a tastier chicken methinks. Read More
