  1. Melt butter in a skillet; cook and stir onion just until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Stir tomatoes, green chiles, and salt into onion mixture; reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, until liquid evaporates, about 10 minutes.
  2. Stir Cheddar cheese into green chile mixture; cook until melted, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately.
