  1. Cut herring fillets into small pieces and place in a bowl. Add yogurt, onion, pickled cucumber, mustard, black pepper, and sugar; mix well to combine.
  2. Cover with plastic wrap and chill before serving so the flavors can develop, at least 3 hours.

  • Look for herring marinated with onion, not oil. If the herring fillets are very salty, soak them in milk for about 1 hour. Rinse and pat dry with paper towels before proceeding with the recipe.
