Delicious Buttermilk Pancakes
These are very delicious pancakes and my family loves them.
These are very delicious pancakes and my family loves them.
Light, fluffy, everything a pancake should be - I cut the sugar down to 2 Tbsp., added 1 tsp. of vanilla, and used 2 Tbsp. of melted butter vs. 1/4 c. of vegetable oil.
Read MoreNOT REAL PANCAKES. I am sorry to have to do this, but I can't give these a great review. I tried them to make and freeze as a quick to-go snack, though I was confused about the mixing method - THE BLENDER?? Doesn't this go against traditional pancake 'mix until just barely combined' reasoning? OKAY, well it does. They seemed at first to be light and fluffy, LOOKED GREAT but the texture was just too weird. Like gummy, or something. I am still going to make them for myself, alter the recipe and include whole grains, and use them as a carb boost before running. But not ever for morning pancakes.

These were really, really good! Very light and fluffy and definitely restaurant quality. I was able to made 12 medium size pancakes by upping the flour and buttermilk to 1/2 a cup, but left everything else the same. I also added a splash of vanilla extract to the batter and used brown sugar. These really didn't need syrup. We rolled them up with sausage links and hubby (who's not a breakfast person) had 2 helpings. I'm so glad I gave these a try. Highly recommended! Thanks bunches Amber :)
My family loved, loved, loved, this recipe! We just finished eating a batch of these yummy pancakes! They are so light and fluffy! I didn't have any buttermilk, so I added 2 tbs. of vinegar to regular milk. It helped give it that delicious buttermilk flavor. I also added an extra 1/4 cup of flour. That seemed to give it a better consistency. I will definitely be making these again!
These pancakes are good but the recipe calls for to much sugar. Next time I will halve the sugar. I used a 50 percent all purpose flour to 50 percent buckwheat flour.
Be sure to double this recipe. I have three teenage children and could put both batches away in a heart beat. I served with fresh blueberry sauce but my son used real Canadian Maple Syrup. Either way I will make again.
Excellent! I used a mixer b/c I don't have a blender and they were still light and fluffy. Be careful when cooking, they burn easily. Cook on medium heat.
I made these for breakfast this morning and we really enjoyed the sweet, light texture. My only change would be to add a pinch of salt. I'll be saving this one in my recipe box and definitely make these again.
I LOVE this recipe!!! Even my little picky eaters did! My kids even wanted thirds (which is UNHEARD of!). Thanks for the recipe! This will be my normal pancake recipe. I did try and like the Buttermilk pancakes II, but these are so easy! Thanks again!
Perfect! Very light, fluffy, and flavorful. These melt in your mouth and taste so good with peaches, butter, and cool whip. This recipe was just what I was searching for. I have tried other highly rated recipes on the site, but they just don't compare to this one. Yummy! My child even compared them to the fabulous resturaunt (not a chain) pancakes I was looking to emulate, and said she liked them as much! Well, kids are perfectly honest! This is going to be a staple in my house. I did make a few changes to make them less fattening, though: I used reduced fat buttermilk, baking splenda for sugar, and light butter instead of oil, and they were still fabulous! I also had to subsitute 1/4 cup of milk for buttermilk since I ran out. I bet they'd be even better with the regular stuff. Great recipe.

Pretty good basic recipe. I added some sugar, vanilla and cinnamon.
I wanted to update my review. These fluffy pancakes are my go to recipe!! I add a tsp of vanilla, a 1/4 tsp of butter flavoring and a pinch of salt. I now have found a much easier way to cook them. Preheat oven to 425. Place pancake batter in a 9x13 pan (with nonstick spray) and bake for 10 minutes. Cut and serve! Much easier than standing over a hot stove :). This has seriously changed my life!!
This is the PERFECT pancake recipe! They're exactly like what you get at the popular pancake house! I was concerned that tossing everything in the blender would result in a rubbery pancake, but they were perfect. Plus I love that the blender's pour spout allows me to make perfectly round pancakes. Now I can't wait to have breakfast guests so I can impress them with this recipe! Long live Leema! Your recipe rocks! 5 stars!
I just found out (by accident) that if you cut out the oil, it would still taste the same AND you can use the amount of oil you cut out to grease the pan rather than putting it in the pancake itself.
These pancakes were pretty good. I can't pinpoint it but something is bland about them surprisingly enough. I added 1 1/2 tsp of vanilla which helped. I honestly have to say I think they are almost too sweet. Need like a 1/4 tsp of salt or something to break up the straight sugar flavor. Especially once you put syrup on them. Good but I prefer my old pancakes. Sorry =(
I really liked these pancakes. I doubled the recipe and it was a little thin so I added 1/4 C more flour. I would use just half the amount of sugar next time as I do not care for "sweet".
Ohhh yum! I had bought buttermilk for a cake that I was baking and had a lot to use up so I made this recipe. I was making it at supper time (I freeze my pancakes so my kids can have them in the mornings) but had something else cookin' for the hubby and myself, but we couldn't keep our hands off these! I bet we ate 4 pancakes prior to supper! Needless to say, we weren't so hungry for our supper! My kids had them for supper and gobbled them right up! I don't think I will make another pancake recipe other than this one! LOVE IT!
too much sugar and I can taste the baking soda. I'd reduce the baking soda by half and add only a couple of tbls of sugar.
I used this as base for Whole Wheat Sourdough Pancakes. Mix WW Flour & Buttermilk night before, cover & set overnight. Add other ingredients in morning. Alt: Bumped Flour & Milk to 2 C, added 1/4 tsp Salt, Doubled other ingredients... WONDERFUL!! Had 6 picky college girls over for breakfast.. scarfed these right down!
Really yummy fluffy pancakes--have used this recipe a long time now! I never have buttermilk on hand but always have sour cream, so my pancakes are always sour cream cakes rather than butter milk. I just use almost a cup of milk (don't make too runny) and 1/4 cup sour cream. The pancakes melt in your mouth. :o) Thanks for a great, easy recipe!
can we say AMAZING!!! These are perfect! thank you so much for the recipe!
my family LUVed these pancakes! they told me they were better than the restaurant kind. At first they were skeptical because it involved using the puree function on the blender, but it turned out good. However, the second time we made this we didn't use the blender and instead hand mixed it. This resulted in crepe like pancakes that broke easily.
These were incredible! I just added a couple dashes of cinnamon and a couple pinches of salt. Amazing.
WOW! This is the best pancake I had. We used wheat flour instead of the white which added some more texture and crunchiness to the pancake. We absolutely loved it. Buttermilk was the magic ingredient. The pancake was fluffy, moist, slightly browned, & slightly sweet. This is a recipe to keep.
This was great!! I had spare buttermilk from a previous recipe and decided to make these for my son before school. He LOVED them! They are so easy to make and so quick too! I was going to do what others suggested and add a tsp of vanilla but forgot. It didn't matter though because they tasted delicious without it. I also didn't have any oil so used butter instead which worked perfectly. I don't have a blender but the food processor worked just as well. The pancakes are so light and fluffy, perfect. Thank you.
these are pretty good pancakes. no changes made aside from substituting 1/2 cup of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. blending makes these pancakes light plus there's an easy clean up. thanks amber!
These pancakes are fantastic! They are so light and fluffy. My picky husband even liked them. Thanks for the recipe!
Well this weekend that passed I decided to make these. They were FLAT. I took the advice of others and let it rest in the fridge for about an 1 hr. I added some vanilla but they were flat. I'm disappointed because of that. But I am going to give them a shot again this weekend and im only going to let them rest for about 15 mins and see what happens then.
We raved about these pancakes - the best recipe so far that I have tried. I live in Germany, so it's not easy to find similar ingredients here, but this was so simple and turned out great! I took photos, so I will submit them for you. This will be my pancake recipe from now on...fluffy and tasty...yum to the MAX!
These have a really great taste, but the batter came out super thin for me and I got a whole bunch of pancakes...then I came back to write this review and realized I completely left out the 1/4 c. of veg. oil!!! Duh! Anyway, they still came out very good and it makes me wonder if I'll put the veg oil in next time...I also added about 1/2 tsp of cinnamon (cuz I always do, even to box mix) and had to make my own buttermilk (1 T. lemon juice to 1 c. milk, let it sit for 5 min before using). So, I'm gonna PRINT this out and tape it to the inside of my "baking" cupboard, because I think this is way better than, and just as quick as, a pancake mix.
Very tasty pancakes. Need to be patient while they cook. Added 1 tsp vanilla. We doubled the batch to feed 4 - 5 people.
Defintely the best pancakes my family has ever had - we love these. I add blueberries, bananas and other goodies to them sometimes too. I have to double the batch easily each time. It's a definite keeper!
These are the best pancakes I have ever made. I was looking for I-Hop and I found better than I-Hop. They do melt in your mouth. I used the trick of milk with a little vinegar to substitute for the buttermilk. 1 1/1 c. milk and a tablespoon of plain white vinegar. Out of this world. This is my new pancake recipe. Thank you!
These are fabulous! I prefer to whisk them by hand, instead of using the blender. They turn out spongy when you use the blender.
I'll never buy a box mix again! These make the most delicious pancakes you'll ever eat. I reduced the sugar by about half and added 1 teaspoon of salt. Be sure to use pure maple syrup!
These taste just like the ihop pancakes. I couldn't make them fast enough!
these were really good...i doubled the recipe tho and froze the left overs for handy quick pancakes...will make them again...thanks for the recipe
4 stars b/c I mistakenly did not follow the recipe, but they came out excellent none the less. I did not look to see that these were supposed to be made in a blender I just mixed the dry ingredients in a bowl and added the wet. I was thinking of decreasing the amount of sugar but instead I accidentally forgot to add it all together ;) it worked out fine because I don't like things too sweet and I do use a little maple syrup. I think if I did add sugar, personally I would use a lot less than called for, maybe use a tablespoon or two. I also ended up using a touch more buttermilk to thin out the batter a tad. My pancakes came out so light and fluffy, really good. For me it ended up making 6 6inch diameter pancakes, so I would maybe double it next time!
FIVE STAR recipe!! these were AWWWWWESOME!! I will cherish this fine recipe for many years to come. Even my kids ate their share and that is RARE. thanks for sharing this recipe.
These were good, although I preferred the recipe for Buttermilk Pancakes II from this site.
I made these for Christmas breakfast and they were terrible, I hate to say it but I went back to the Aunt Jemima mix
Pretty good. I wasn't blown away per say but I'm not a huge pancake fan and everyone else said they were tasty. I separated the dry and wet ingredients before mixing together and they came out pretty full and fluffy. I will try to part II recipe and compare.
No salt, too much sugar, and the blender creates too much gluten which toughens the batter and makes it rubbery. Too much baking soda as well; the baking soda should just be enough to adjust for the lower pH of buttermilk, and the batter should rise with the application of heat, not beforehand. Halve the sugar, halve the baking soda, add 1/4 tsp salt, mix by hand, and now you have a real pancake batter.
Very good!! My grandson said they tasted better than the pancakes at the Orignial Pancake House.
Excellent. Super fluffy. I would increase the buttermilk to 1/5 cups because my batter was too thick. The sugar in the batter does the trick, but next time I might cut the sugar in half.
Good flavor, but really runny. Followed the recipe exactly. We prefer a thicker pancake.
Made these this morning and they were delicious! I added vinegar to the milk for a buttermilk, and used butter instead of oil; and they were great! Thanks for a simple, delicious homemade pancake recipe!
Awesome! I got compliments all around. I used lemon juice to make buttermilk. LOVE doing it in the blender. Oh and I got 8 pancakes out of the batch.
Great basic recipe! So easy to make and clean up since all you need is a few measuring spoons and cups, the blender, and a spatula! 10/10 rating! Great with some homemade fruit sauce and maple syrup! I would highly recommend this recipe.
Very good! Substituted soured milk (milk + 1 t. vinegar, let sit for a few mins to curdle) because it was super early and I didn't have any buttermilk. Very fluffy and made just the right amount of pancakes for two people with average appetites. A keeper for sure!
I found the batter to be runny and the pancakes to be off in taste. I followed the directions and didn't substitute anything. They were very filling, however. I probably won't make these again. Sorry.
My family absolutely loves these pancakes! Even my picky toddler will eat them. I replace the sugar with honey and use spelt flour...they are still delicious and I "feel like" they are a little healthy. :) We freeze the extra batter in Ziploc bags and add fresh fruit or chocolate chips. Yum!!
I made this when we had guests for lunch, with syrupy strawberries on the side. Some pancakes had a handful of blueberries cooked into them. And squeezable golden syrup for those who preferred their stack with less imagination. It was a treat for everyone.
This recipe was delicious! Don't be concerned about how watery the batter looks - they come out just fine.
These pancakes taste great but cook up flat. I was expecting wonderfully fluffy pancakes, so that was disappointing. My baking products are all new and have been "proofed," so I know the problem isn't with my powder or soda.
After reading the mixed reviews on this recipe I was a bit nervous about their taste. I make pancakes for my kids once a week before school and they were the judge for taste. Both kids like them very much. Their addition to the recipe was butterscotch chips!
These pancakes were delicious! Even my picky daughter gobbled them right up! I will never buy boxed pancake mix again! These were super easy to whip up-which I'm all about. They turned out so fluffy too. Yum yum!!
OMG, I have had so many pancake disasters but this is a foolproof, quick recipe. I made them last Sunday for my four year old niece and she loved them. The only changes I made were the following: - Didn't have buttermilk so I substituted with 1 1/4 cup milk and just over 1 Tbsp vinegar - Added 1 tsp vanilla to the liquid mixture - Added 1/4 tsp salt to the dry mixture I made a big batch after work today which I'm going to freeze and just heat up in the toaster as needed. Thanks for a great recipe! :) Vim
These are great pancakes with some changes! I substitute the oil for melted butter and add 1/4 cup more flour. I do like these better than any other pancake recipe on here with these changes done! They are thick and delicious with my brother in laws own maple syrup! Thanks for sharing a great recipe!
Needs SALT! I had to throw out the first two pancakes before I realized this. Also, they aren't very thick. I was wanting something a little thicker.
Great pancakes, batter saves well in the fridge for a couple of days. These are very easy to make and my daughter and husband love them.
I wouldn't buy buttermilk just to make these, but if you have some to use up, they aren't that bad. Thin, not fluffy, and sweet.
These are the best fluffy pancakes I have ever had! I cut half the sugar down. I put them in the blender like the recipe said and they were perfect! Next time, I will add vanilla.
Yummy taste! Very light and soft. Somewhat hard to flip and keep from burning. Maybe that is due to the high sugar content. I will try reducing the sugar next time. The batter was also too thin. I had to add 1/4 cup more flour. Next time I might make it a bit thicker. Overall the taste was great, but the recipe needs to be adjusted a bit.
Using the blender for this recipe made it so quick and easy as the batter poured out perfectly without making any additional mess. The pancakes puffed up nicely and were light, fluffy and delicious.
Just awesome. I used a organic pastry flour and also added a touch of vanilla. Perfect!
great recipe! i'm in the process of still grilling a few pancakes, but wanted to write this because they're so good! I made a few modifications: used 1.5 C of flour, used brown sugar instead of white. I didn't have a full 1.25 cups of buttermilk, so I substituted with some 2% milk. And finally I added bacon! It was leftover from the salad last night. So good!
Very good, quick an easy recipe. A little sweet and I reduce the sugar by 1/2. I don't like to use extra kitchen equipment if not necessary, so I omitted the blender and just whisked a few times by hand. This way, they come out light and fluffy. Sometimes I will add a mashed banana into the mix as we love banana pancakes in my house.
Terrific! I had tried other pancake recipes, and there simply seemed to be not enough fluff. I followed the recipe pretty much exactly, with a bit less sugar and adding some vanilla and cinnamon, and am eating them as I type! They're wonderfully fluffy, and the texture is amazing. I mixed them in a bowl and let my buttermilk (milk +vinegar) and eggs sit out a bit beforehand.
mmmmm! these are soooo good! they just melt in your mouth! i've tried several different buttermilk pancake recipes and this ones got to be my favorite! this is a keeper. i will be making this again very soon. but next time i think im going to add a little bit of salt. i did think they needed it.
OMG..... We enjoyed this recipe! My husband loves to make pancakes every Saturday, so we always keep a box of HJ in the pantry. Well I must say after making these (which was super easy) we will never buy box pancake mix again. The only thing we added was a 1/2 tbl spoon of vanilla. Thanks for the recipe!!
This batter made delicious pancakes! I followed the recipe almost exactly, and the pancakes were very light and fluffy. All I had was light buttermilk, and they were still perfect. Somethings to keep in mind when making them: -the batter both rises and spreads, so don't overcrowd your griddle. -let the griddle get hot before pouring the batter, but keep it at a medium heat. I'll definitely be making these again!
Rarely do I make pancakes though tried these and they were delicious. I used a little less sugar was the only change made based on prior comments. Cooking for one presents its challenges as in leftovers. I put the extra pancakes in a plastic sandwich bag and will just warm them in skillet to enjoy again tomorrow.
This is the best of the two buttermilk recipes on this website. Very easy to make in the blender. Put unused portions in the fridge, blender and all, and use the next day. They make beautiful pancakes that brown evenly on BOTH sides and the flavor is excellent. Wonderful recipe! Thanks.
I just tried this recipe this morning and it had a very good taste and texture. The only change I made was to add a dash of cinnamon and vanilla flavoring, which I do to all pancake recipes. I followed the advice of another post and used a whisk instead of cranking up the blender. Thanks for a wonderful recipe!
Great Pancake, didn't even use a blender just whisked everything together came out perfect
These were amazingly fluffy! I followed 2 suggestions from other reviewers - 1) I upped the flour & buttermilk to 1&1/2 cups and left the other ingredients the same 2) I let the buttermilk and eggs sit out of the fridge for a couple of hours prior to making the batter. They were incredibly fluffy and delicious! I used whole wheat flour and they weren't weighed down at all.
These are fabulous! I add a tsp. of vanilla. They are easy, fluffy, and delicious!
I used regular milk instead of buttermilk and they were excellent!
I've tried numerous pancake recipes before, and they never seem to come out right. But then I came across this one and it seemed really easy so I gave it a shot. And lo and behold, it's great!! I've made it like 5 times in the past couple of weeks! It's simple and tastes really good. If I have any leftovers, I just let them cool and put them in a ziploc bag and throw them in the freezer for breakfast at a later date.
My family LOVED these, my 8yo son said I should put this recipe on the internet so other people can make them ;). My daughter who loves sugary foods ate these without syrup. They are that good. I did add a pinch of salt and splash of vanilla as recommended by others. The first few pancakes I flipped when they were almost too soft to flip, and those are the ones I liked the best. ENJOY!!
I followed the recipe exactly & they came out WAY too thick and didn't cook through correctly.
I have been trying different pancake recipes now for a while, and I gotta tell ya....these rock! By far the best pancakes (made at home) I have ever tasted. Needless to say, I am no longer searching for the best pancake recipe.
My kids loved these. Added 1/2 tsp of vanilla, but followed recipe otherwise.
We really enjoyed these. The only thing I did differently was the addition of about 1 1/2 tsp of vanilla and I didn't bother with the blender, I just whisked wet ingredients into dry and blended really well. My boyfriend commented that 'this is how I like my pancakes.' It made the perfect amount for our family of four. We will certainly be using this again. Thank you!
these were delicious....I used butter instead of vegetable oil.....because I love the flavor.......I'll be making them again
this recipe definitely needs a bit of salt...not much flavor otherwise
Amazing, fluffy, light pancakes that are SO easy to make. We followed the recipe exactly, and mix the dry ingredients in advance, so that we just pull out a container of the dry, mix with the liquids in a blender, and stir in fresh blueberries. HUGE rave from me- these never stick around for long at the brunch table!
This is the latest addition to my "go to" pancake recipes. Putting the batter in the blender goes against everything I have ever seen or heard about pancake batter, so I couldn't bring myself to do it. Overmixing is the death of pancake batter so I didn't put this in the blender. I stirred gently until mixed and it came out just fine. I liked the addition of the sugar because otherwise it's a pretty standard pancake recipe... buttermilk, flour, baking soda & salt
Totally forgot about the half cup oil, and it still turned out delish!
