Easy to make and very tasty!!! =D
Exactly what I want in a soda bread - simplicity. To make it to my desired consistency, I added one teaspoon of baking powder to the recipe and I cooked it for only 30 minutes.
This is my go-to bread from now on. I didn't have white sugar (we're in lockdown because of Covid-19 so I couldn't go get any) so used brown sugar which gave the bread a nice colour and i'm sure changes the taste a little. I also baked it for 25 minutes then let it cool in the open oven (which I turned off obviously). The baking time in the recipe is way off I think. I wasn't careful with adding the milk mixture but it didn't matter at the end. This is a GREAT bread for mopping up gravy!
Used buttermilk, but otherwise made as written. Hard chewy crust and doughy interior. Served with Guiness Corned Beef and Irish Champ, which were very good. Sorry, not sure what went wrong.
Easy to make and great to eat!
This turned out wonderful! I did only bake it for a half hour as others mentioned and it was perfect. I also buttered it a couple minutes before taking it out as someone mentioned. Kids ate it up too. I will be making it often.
Easy recipe for sure. Read other reviews and baked less time. It was under baked. I will do it again and bake as per instructions. Flavour was there and texture great.
Super quick & easy. Turned out great! Followed another reviewer's suggestion to knead in the bowl & saved myself a mess. Also didn't use all of milk mixture, just what was needed for dough consistency. Makes a rather small loaf.
I usually don't review recipes that I change in any way but all I did differently was to add 1/2 cup of raisins and cut the baking time to 25 minutes(maybe my oven is off or I made my "round"too big). It had the exact texture and just the sweetness I was looking for - moist scone. Delicious. I will be making this again and again.
Very fast. Had a little too much of a "soda" flavor, but it mellowed after a day or so.
As good as all the earlier reviews say. Do add milk slowly as needed.
The final texture was rubbery and the crust very tough. The dough was also quite sticky to work with. It didn't hold it's shape at all, I should have chosen to put it in a pan.
This was delicious! I didn't have high expectations because I had to use gluten free flour and I didn't have any milk so I substituted 1/2 almond milk and 1/2 cream. I made half a batch, divided it into 2 pieces and made 2 very-generously sized mini loaves. I was expecting two little hockey pucks but it raised beautifully and was very tender and moist. This is going to be a go-to recipe in my house.
Made it as written, turned out great. Will definitely be making this bread again, so easy.
Tried kneading it directly on the baking sheet and it worked fine. It did bake perfectly in only 30 minutes.
We all loved it . I made it tonight. No leftovers for sure. I did not have milk on hand but did have half and half so tried it instead and it turned out fine. Will follow the recipe exactly next time. Wonderful texture and flavor, easy to make. Thanks for the recipe. I have tried others before with not such great results and I am a bread baker .
Easy, delicious and a keeper! The only change I did was add 2 Tablespoons sugar and baked for just 30 minutes.
It turned out amazing! Followed the recipe exactly.
This is not my first time making this delicious bread, although this is the first time photographing my final product! Hands down, AMAZING recipe and NEVER fails!??
This was so easy! After reading other reviews, I modified the baking time to 25 minutes and it came out perfect! Our family gobbled it up in less than 5 minutes and was asking for more. We will be doubling or tripling the batch next time!
Did two, first one didn’t last! Cooked the second one 5 minutes longer, as the first one was a little under done. The reviews were right, 30 minutes is just about right. Will definitely make this again!
Delicious! Crispy crust and tender inside.
SO delicious and also easy!!! This was the first time I had ever made Irish soda bread. I added about 1.5 tablespoons of chia seeds and almost 1 cup of craisins to give it a little extra sweetness (and use up some chia seeds). It only needed to be baked for 30 minutes; 45 would have definitely bben too much in my oven.
I loved this simple no nonsense bread. It is delicious served sliced and lightly toasted with butter. Such a comfort!
No I did not make any changes, recipe was perfect as is.
I followed instructions to the tee, checked them three times as I went, just to make sure. It was a mess, not even close to anything that I could knead. I poured it onto the floured surface hoping that I could stiffen it up..nope! So I poured it onto the greased cookie sheet and put it in the oven. It's still baking, we shall see how it tastes when it's done but this did not turn out anywhere close to what I was expecting it to. Very disappointed.
This was wonderful. My husband loved it. I used part home-ground Prairie Gold flour. I did not need all the milk called for. Wonderful hard crust and soft inside. I will be baking this again.
Fresh bread is the best, but this is easy and quick. I will be making this more often. I had all ingredients on hand except vinegar, I subbed with fresh lemon juice which worked great. I also added whole wheat flour to it as the dough was extremely wet. Brought it to a nice consistency with delicious flavor.
I added a couple cups of applesauce instead of sugar. Then added flour to make dough stiff enough for bread! I also tripled the recipe. This goes fast here. It needed the 45 minutes. I also used tin loaf pans. Turned out great
Love this.....tribute to my Great Grandmother, Elizabeth McCoy!
Great and easy recipe! I’m making my 2nd loaf of the day the family loved it so much! The first time I used a non-stick sheet to make and bread was done in 25/30 minutes. The second time I used a regular cookie sheet and bake time was 30 minutes. Thank you for wonderful recipe!
Next time I'll cut the bake time about 10 mins. Will make again. Delicious.
I made this very easy bread to go with my corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day! The only thing I would do is maybe use a milk or egg wash on the top because it looks pretty dry. The inside was not too dry though. It was my first time making Irish Soda Bread so I was pretty happy with the results. I will make it again for sure!
Great simple recipe but timings are too long. 15-20 mins is enough
We loved it and like one person said, she and her husband ate the whole loaf, I can totally understand! I forgot to take a pic, but it came out looking very nice. As stated in other reviews, I only baked it for 30 minutes. I didn't have whole milk so I used heavy cream and I think it gave it a sweeter taste and it was still really good but I'm going to give it another try with whole milk next time. With the heavy cream the dough was super dry so I added just a little bit of water to wet the dough. We ate it with Irish butter, it was delicious!
I had fat free milk so I added 2tbs of melted butter. I baked the bread for 30 minutes then I turned off oven and I let it rest inside for 10 minutes. Bread came out super good. Crust is nice and inside texture is good. I’ll be making this more often
Delicious! I followed the recipe but doubled it, added minced chives and made rolls instead by using a biscuit cutter. Baked for 25 minutes.
Horrible! I’m an experienced baker and my dough was more like a batter. Others said not to add more flour, but I didn’t see any other way to make a dough. Needless to say it didn’t turn out, flat & rubbery!
Absolutely loved this recipe! I used buttermilk and replaced 1 cup of the flour for whole wheat flour and it came out perfect. Crunchy outside and soft inside. So easy that I will certainly make it again. Thank you!
I converted this to be gluten free as I have celiac disease. I used 1 C rice flour, 1 C tapioca, and added 1.5 teaspoons of xanthan gum. I also used a little more salt and a little less sugar. I normally make soda bread when I am too lazy to go buy yeast. This is not the recipe I normally use for soda bread but decided to try this one. It came out very crusty and good. I have an electric oven, so I put a pan of water on the bottom shelf for moistness. I also baked the bread in a cast iron skillet. Maybe because it was GF, I had to bake it the full 45 minutes. It came out dense, but delicious. I had to exercise self control and not eat the whole loaf.
I've tried a few soda bread recipes and this one is head and shoulders above the rest. Easy to make, no fancy ingredients, and super yummy! I will admit, I add more flour to the recipe as I kneed the dough. It's too sticky otherwise. But I try to not add too much and dry the dough out.
I whipped up this recipe up last minute to go with a stew. It turned out great, though, I kind of over baked it. I will do this recipe again and watch it closer next time.
I love this recipe! So easy and inexpensive and wonderful texture and flavor. I've used all purpose flour and other times whole wheat. Both are really good as a treat or part of a meal. I can hear my Irish ancestors cheering!
I've made this bread 3 times and the amount of milk I used was different each time. Just add 3/4 of it and mix and then add more if needed. It's really yummy bread and I will make it many more times.
ITS WONDERFUL SO SIMPLE WE LOVE IT
This soda bread was so easy to make and tasted very, very good. Yes the dough is very sticky, but if you do not want to get your hands dirty then stay out of the kitchen. This bread is so tasty we will be having it next week with an irish stew.
Teachers wanted to make bread for Kansas birthday week. Wanted an easy as possible recipe and there are a lot of people in Kansas with Irish ancestry! This was easy for 1st graders to handle. It is sticky so they need to put a lot of flour on their hands. We have aluminum tart pans and divided each by 6 and they each had their own bread. Kids really enjoyed it!
This is basically a giant biscuit, and so the dough should NOT be kneaded. It's too wet for that anyway. Just pour it into a greased round cake pan, and don't worry about cutting a cross. 20 min. was enough time. The texture is slightly chewy, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
LOVE this recipe! turns out every time!
Big hit with family and friends! Goes very well with Beef and Guinness Stew. I've made both multiple times just as recipe is (except for decreasing the baking time as one reviewer suggested)
Love this recipe! I doubled it and added 1 more tbsp of sugar and it came out perfectly! I make at least once or twice a month and my son loves it when I do.
I made it for a brunch meeting and added two T. Mediterranean seasoning as I was sauteeing the vegetables, added some fresh asparagus I had and also cut the sour cream in half, but added some leftover Boursin cheese which gave some more flavor. Served with sour cream and fresh salsa toppings, it was a hit!
My family had never had soda bread before, so I was excited to try this recipe. I have three children, ages 7, 5, and 2. All of them loved it, as did my wife and I.
This was so sticky there was no way I could take a knife to cut it. I had removed from pan twice adding about a cup more of flour. In the oven now but not sure how it will turn out as since I added more flour maybe I should have added more sugar, salt, and soda. I will update once done.
tasty and very easy to make as the bread doesn't need to rise.
It tasted ok. . really dry. .. so made a second time came out the same. .. I've had Irish soda bread... I grew up eating it and this isn't it...
Bake time was much too long. My oven usually takes longer but at 45 min my loaf burned. Cutting off the burned bottom it still tastes really good. The dough is sticky but handled it very little with flour. Added a box of raisins. It was great. I will make it again for sure.
I followed the recipe and yes, it's delicious!!! It definitely is a sticky mess, but with patience and flour... you manage :) So happy I found this! Can't wait to make it again!
Just finished having corned beef and cabbage with this Irish Soda Bread. This was delicious! I doubled the recipe with the exception of the sugar. Only added the 1 tablespoon. What flavor! Moist inside with a beautiful crust. Only baked for 30 minutes. My dough was on the sticky side which I feel made the bread stay moist. Will use this recipe again and again.
Every time I make this everyone raves about it. It is such an easy recipe to follow and always comes out great.
Absolutely delicious. Did not change a thing but I did bake it in my cast iron skillet. DH and a neighbor that we had over for dinner, LOVED it. She even ask for the recipe. So simple, yet amazing texture!
I pretty much followed the recipe exactly and got phenomenal results. The only deviation I really made was to use my mixer with bread hooks rather than knead by hand. I did take note in Step 3 not to add too much of the soured milk -- just until it came together. I ended up with about 1/4 cup of the soured milk left over. As others have said, it doesn't seem to require the whole bake time; mine only took 22 or 23 minutes. Also, not sure if it matters, but I ended up letting the milk and vinegar stand longer than 10 minutes -- about 20 minutes. I didn't worry too much about shaping a perfect round on the baking sheet and it still rose nicely and looked/tasted great coming out of the oven. I love bread and I love this recipe. It's actually kind of got me wondering why we go out to buy bread at all.
This is an amazing recipe. I had it with some authentic Irish stew with my Irish friends. It's a keeper!!
Easy and delicious!
Great & easy recipe. Next time I will add a smidge more sugar & knead the dough in the bowl (dough is super sticky). But, this is now my go to soup bread!
I baked mine 30 minutes because of other reviewer's suggestions, but it was still doughy in the middle. Wish I'd followed the recipe and baked it for 45. But I think if cooked the proper time it would be delicious.
I have been making this recipe for my family for a while. We love it, always have. I suggest turning the oven to 375 and cooking for the same amount of time. We found that it's pretty hard and crusty and difficult to cut when cooked at 400.
This was terrific, as is. I also made a loaf with buttermilk. Nice, very good. Husband says this is our new "Daily Bread". Easy enough to do it every day, as well.
Turned out great. Easy to make.
I followed the recipe and added a handful of dried blueberries - I baked for 30 minutes based on previous reviews. Delicious. Other reviews said to not use a floured surface for kneading, but I did b/c the dough was so wet - next time I will still use a floured surface but use less flour for a crispier crust.
I love this recipe thanks for the recipe the only this i did was watch my time in the oven.
Super easy bread recipe. Dough rolls out on the wet side, just use a well floured surface and hands to knead it. A tad on the salty side (basically biscuit consistency), pairs well with triple cream cheeses. I added half a cup of golden raisins, didn’t affect the bake (negatively) at all.
I made it with Diane’s Colcannon, and Guinness Corned Beef last year for Bunco dinner. Now my bunco friends are asking for the recipes!
easy and yum!
Made it in honor of St Paddy's Day and it was delish! I didn't read the reviews ahead but I took it out at 40 min and next time I'll do 35. Very simple with terrific results. I did add two tablespoons of sugar. Thanx!
I decided to use buttermilk instead of curddling the mike and added grated cheddar cheese. It only took 30 mins to cook. I made the first batch by just adding the milk and mixing the second batch was better when I slowly added the milk and stopped adding as soon ad the loaf stuck together. Using the dryer dough made for better bread.
Nice and simple with good flavor
quick, easy and so good! I only baked it for about 25 minutes. Will make again
This bread is so easy and really good, if you want a crusty loaf of bread to go with soup or dinner this is a good easy bread to make.
awesome!!! Nice presentation, a nice hearty bread
Very easy to make, quite good.
This is the best soda bread I've ever had! I registered just so I could let you know how amazing it is!! This will be my go to recipe from now on! Thank you!!
Added a little extra flour and a handful of raisins. Good texture and tasted great!
This was ok. Maybe it's supposed to taste bland, but I wasn't impressed.
Soo easy - and excellent! It will be STICKY.....this is normal.
If you follow the recipe exactly, as I did, the dough comes out too thin. I rescued it by following the Amazingly Easy Irish Soda Bread recipe. I added 2 C of flour, 1/2 C of margarine or butter and 1 egg to the batter. This came out fine. In the future I will add 1/2 C of the vinegar and milk mixture and slowly add any additional vinegar and milk mixture until it forms a batter that can be kneaded.
My 13 year old daughter made it completely by herself, twice. It was delicious both times.
Delicious and so easy! Next time I think I’ll double the recipe cuz it’s so yummy!
It wasn't bad. The dough was really gummy before baking so it didn't come out too smooth when it was finished. But perhaps I did something wrong. It was really easy, and it didn't taste bad at all. I'm going to try to make it again.
I doubled it and cooked it in two bread pans for 30 minutes. It was so simple and so good. We will be making this many more times. My English husband was so pleased with it. So tired of seeing people put raisins in soda bread. 15 years in England and have never seen this once, anywhere. He has family living in Ireland and been many times and has never seen it there either.
Great recipe! Easy and just like my grandma's!
We’re making a trip to Ireland soon, and am anxious to try ‘real’ Irish made Soda Breads ... Aside from the name, this recipe sounds the most authentic, super easy and should be really great tasting ... I will update upon return (with a ‘taste base’ for comparison) and again after making my own Texas version ... eat well y’all !!
I've been searching for true soda bread and after trying countless recipes for "Irish Soda Bread" which are sweet, almost like scones, I almost gave up until I came across this one. This is what you eat for dinner. So simple, so easy to make and so good. Makes boiled potatoes and salt a really good dinner. Thank you for sharing a bit of Erin with the world.
Delicious! I followed the directions but based on some of the recommendations I added an extra tablespoon of sugar, 2 teaspoons of caraway seeds and half a cup of currents. I baked for 30 minutes. It was absolutely delicious warm with butter.
Awesome and easy. came out great first try. stickier than I thought it might be but turned out moist and delicious. I did have to cut cooking time down to 35 minutes.
Very good recipe. I brushed the top with melted Irish butter before baking and sprinkled fleur de sel for extra flavor and crunch.
Great recipe!! The dough does come out very sticky. but will work once turned out onto well floured surface. I decreased cook time to 25 min or so. 45 is too long and would've burned it.
Was yummy I will make it again!
