  1. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium high heat and lightly oil grate.
  2. Use either a 9x13 inch grill-safe baking dish OR a piece of foil large enough to hold all the ingredients. Layer with the potatoes, onions, pats of margarine, salt and ground black pepper. Sprinkle top with imitation bacon bits. Cover with foil and make sure you seal tightly so the margarine does not escape.
  3. Grill over medium high heat for 45 to 60 minutes, or to desired doneness. Carefully open, arrange the cheese over all and allow a few minutes for the cheese to melt. Remove from grill and serve immediately.

These were good, but think they can be improved by adding garlic, using grated sharp cheddar, and real bacon.

This was very yummy! As other reviewrs suggested I used cheddar cheese and only one stick of butter.

Made a modified version of this for a party and everyone loved it! I baked it in the oven at 375 for 45 minutes (taking the foil off the last 5 - 10 minutes to let the cheese brown a bit). I use...

Okay, I made this super easy - used diced, frozen hash browns, pre-cooked bacon, and pre-grated co-jack cheese. And it was still a 5 star recipe! I cooked them in a cast iron pan on the grill,...

These were good, but I wasn't completely thrilled with the American cheese flavor. I think I would have liked it a bit more if there was another kind of cheese. I will make again, but change u...

I actually use shredded cheddar cheese instead. It's very good
