I used Sage instead of the nutmeg and wow! - Just like mom used to make. Rather then making balls you can also make 1 or 2 loaf shaped dumplings that can be sliced and served.
I omited the ham and onion. Here in Germany they opt for bacon bits (or plain) instead of ham. Hubby loved them.
