I always use this recipe for any self-rising flour recipes--this is the same one that Grandma taught me to use when I was just beginning to cook. Why spend almost three bucks for a package when you already have the ingredients on hand?
Read MoreThis totally ruined my cookies! It's way too much salt and my cookies were still flat unlike when I used self raising flour. I'm a seasoned Baker plus it's a recipe I've used countless times before.

Great recipe to use when you run out! And, it's basically made of stuff you already have on hand. Thanks!
I had a recipe for self-rising flour, but didn't have any. I used this recipe and it worked perfect. Thanks for the baking tip.
Good but one minor fix - take out 2 teaspoons of flour to accommodate the salt and baking powder, and then you have 1 cup of self rising flour!
Thank you for this! I know this may sound silly, but sometimes I forget the ratio of ingredients to use when I need to make some of this (because I rarely ever have the need for self rising flour) This works perfectly and I can quickly look it up without having to search all over!
I LOVE this recipe! I hardly ever buy self rising flour because I rarely use it, but this will keep me from buying boxed mixes of cakes and pancakes. It's so simple!
I am so glad someone suggested this recipe to me on the exchange. It worked perfectly and I am grateful! All ingredients are typical ones you would have on hand where self-rising flour is something that isn't.
The flour/baking powder ratio was helpful. Because I am on a salt restricted diet, I can now make my own self-rising flour with salt substitute. Thanks
Couldn't find Whole Wheat Self Rising Flour, so I made my own. Awesome. Thanks!!!!
I'm so glad this recipe is here. Making my own self-rising flour is so much cheaper and more convenient than buying a bag at the store.
Worked perfectly!! I plan to keep this recipe handy because I rarely use self-rising flour and now I won't have to buy it for just one recipe.
I was ecstatic to stumble across this recipe as I don't often need self rising flour, so do not tend to buy it. I decided today to make Apple Snack Squares for an afternoon snack for my boys (from AR), which calls for self rising flour, so this recipe was a saviour! Will use this again I am sure!
Thanks so much for posting this for easy reference!! So many times I couldn't remember the amounts- !!!! Thanks again!! Happy baking!!!
THANK YOU ! I knew I could count on my "All recipes" buddies to come through for me! I found a recipe for quick dinner rolls, then realized I didn't have any self rising flour, ...what would I do without you ?!? Thanks Again!
The first time I used this recipe, it was a rescue measure, but now I use it all the time as a convenience and space-saver! I no longer need to keep a separate canister for self-rising flour!
I agree that this is a useful recipe, I always have the ingredients on hand and don't really want to stock self-rising flour separately. So thanks a bunch!
This was cool since I wanted to use some wheat flour and they don't sell self-rising wheat flour in my stores. It worked great for my pancakes!
Great recipe, got me out of a couple of binds. I don't keep self-rising flour on hand, so this is a life saver :)
I found this recipe on-line a long time ago. It may have come from here. It works great for recipes calling for self-rising flour. The first time I used it for a biscuit recipe and it worked well. I don't use self-rising flour enough to buy a bag of it, so this is a good quick subtitute.
Works perfectly. I never buy self-rising flour, and why would I when I can so easily make the amount I need with three ingredients I always have on hand?
I've had to toss partial bags of self-rising flour over the years because I buy them, use a little, and then the baking powder fails by the time I get to the end of the bag. This will help me salvage the partial still on the shelf by adding new baking powder in the right ratio. I'll never buy another bag again.
I've used this recipe several times now with great success. I'm always happy to have this recipe close at hand! Thanks!
Simply put - this recipe with get you there for sure! Don't waste your money buying self-rising flour at the store, this recipe produces a much better alternative.
This worked very well for me when I made the Righteous Brownies also from this website. It's a great practical addition to my recipe box!
This was 1 recipe that was hard to rate because you can't sample it, but it must of worked, i used it in righteous raspberry brownies a new recipe submited to this site( it was delicious) what i did to make it easier was throw all 3 ingrediants in a plastic container with a cover on it and shake it well then i dumped it inro my brownie mixture, a great practical recipe, thank you!!
I use this recipe all the time. I wouldn't even think of buying self-rising flour.
This came in so handy for a recipe I made tonight! I don't keep self-rising flour on hand (because I know I can make it) so this was a convenient substitute with ingredients in my pantry.
A recipe called for self rising flour. Used this one and the food tasted ok.. but I think it was the recipe not the flour.. I will use this again..
WORKS PERFECTLY. I, TOO, DO NOT KEEP SELF-RISING FLOUR IN THE HOUSE, IN FACT, I'VE NEVER BOUGHT ANY MY WHOLE LIFE! (54) I MAKE 8 CUPS OF THIS AT A TIME, 4TBSP BAKING POWDER AND 4 TSP SALT, PUT IN AIR TIGHT CONTAINER AND KEEP IN THE PANTRY. SO GLAD I FOUND THIS RECIPE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING IT!
Works perfectly, thanks! I don't always use the salt, but I think the key here is the ratio of baking powder to flour.
I am so happy I found this recipe! I can't tell you how many times I've thrown out expired and barely used bags of self rising flour. This recipe worked just as well as the store bought stuff, which I will never buy again.
Thanks for this recipe. Since I never have self rising flour this is a quick easy fix when I need it.
Worked perfectly in Judy's Pumpkin Muffin recipe on this site. I will never buy self rising flour again because I rarely use it and always have regular (or bread) flour on hand. For people who don't bake a lot, this is a real money saver!
This is cool because I have a really bad memory and before I always had to search though the cooking tips. Now I just save this in my recipe box and it's right there! Thank you!
Thanks - I forgot the ratio, but now I can go back to the self-rising biscuit recipe! ;)
This is really very helpful. Thank you! Here in the Czech Republic is no chance to get self rising flour so it helps a lot.
Thanks! I found 2 recipes calling for self rising flour & knew somebody could help me! I started with 3 c all purpose flour plus the salt and baking powder, after shifting I had 4 cups...awesome!
Simple, but effective. And glad that someone posted this so I could favorite it, and not have to look up the amounts every time I need to throw some together.
I NEVER keep self rising flour on hand, and this is the perfect substitute! Thanks for sharing. :)
Thank you for posting this method! The ingredients I have to choose from where I live (Denmark) can sometimes be limited so I often skip recipes that call for things like this that I just can't find. I had been wondering for quite some time how I could recreate it, but now, thanks to this post, I can!
I'm so glad you shared! I made southern biscuits and they turned out fabulous.
Very easy! In a pinch tonight. No self rising flour so made my own. I think I'll do this every time. Super easy. Nice results.
I use this recipe constantly with home-made baking powder. I would be lost without it when it comes to baking biscuits
Perfect. Thanks for sharing. No need to buy, since I don't have room for another type of flour in my pantry, and only use it sporadically anyway. Thanks again!
I tried mug cakes in the microwave. The recipy for self rising flour asked for3/4tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt for 1 cup flour and it worked well in the microwave.will it work for cakes in the oven. The above recipe calls for 1 1/2tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt for 1cup flour .What difference will it make.
I've used this recipe several times & my biscuits always turn out great!
This flour worked really well! It worked just the way it was supposed to. I used these on simple vanilla cupcakes, and they turned out beautifully.
Wow this is really helpful and works just like the self-rising flour you can buy in stores. :) Just don't mistake baking soda for baking powder. I heard using baking soda makes the dough saltier.
I used gluten free flour in place of regular flour. It works great.
Thank you so much for posting this! I always forget to buy self rising, but this saves $ and me when I forget!
This is exactly what I needed as I didn't have self rising flour. Thanks so much!
Excellent, much cheaper to make this flour then to buy it at the store.
I use this all the time as I just do not have room to keep another staple on hand. Works great!
This self - rising flour works fine. I used spelt flour instead of all-purpose, and it turned out great. It is very handy to have this. Add it to your recipe box!
Why buy self-rising flour when you already have the ingredients in your pantry? Works great.
Great recipe but you left out a very important direction. You should always "shake" the baking powder before you measure it. This activates it. Too many new cooks make this mistake.
Works like a charm! I've used it in a yellow cake recipe from this site.
I love this because now I don't have to buy a bag of Self-Rising Flour that I hardly ever use! This worked out well, thanks!
I knew if I typed in self rising flour, someone would save me from a ruined peach cobbler! I thank you and my family thanks you!
Excellent! I used this recipe to make a batter for sweet and sour chicken and it worked perfectly. Thank you!
Works every time and I always have the ing. on hand I don't bother spending the extra money to have someone make it for me.
Thanks so much! Added a little heavy whipping cream to make soft dough, baked at 400 and made divine moist biscuits!
Awesome recipe! I won't buy self rising flour because I just don't use it fast enough. This is perfect!
Worked perfectly. I was making 'Cranapana Bread' and was short 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour. Made up this recipe and the bread rose beautifully. I will continue to use this recipe in place of purchasing self-rising flour.
Thanks for this recipe! I won't have to buy self-rising flour for those "once in while" recipes and then have my self-rising flour get outdated before I need it again.
Wonderful was dreading having to go to the store haha thanks a bundle :)
I made this in a pinch realizing I needed self rising flour and did not have any. Grocery stores rather far for us so running out for one ingredient is really not an option. This turned out great albeit I am not to familiar with self rising flour. I made mini muffins for my kids and they turned out amazing! I will definitely make this again insult buying self rising flour. Thank you!!
Easy, fast and works perfectly! Thanks for this culinary magic!
thank you. i never have self-rising flour. this worked you wonderfully.
Handy.
