Grandma Ople's Apple Pie
This was my grandmother's apple pie recipe. I have never seen another one quite like it. It will always be my favorite, and I hope it becomes one of your favorites as well!

I gave this recipe a 3 star because of all the changes I made. With changes it came out fabulous!!!! Here are the changes.... I tossed apples with 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp nutmeg. I also reduced butter to 1/4 cup, flour in half, and sugars (brown and white to 1/3 cup. I substituted apple cider for water. I did not bother with lattice work. Instead I tossed apples with 3/4 of sauce, I put apples in pie shell and then covered with top. I brushed top with remainder of sauce and followed baking instructions. YUMMY!!!!!
Read MoreThis is a great pie but very sweet and has the potential to become runny.
Thank you for making me look like a baking genius in front of my in-laws! It was devoured and enjoyed by all. I also took others' advice about mixing cinnamon into the apples, independently from the sauce. Wonderful!
this was yummy as is but I'm going to try it will the modifications. thank you for a great pie recipe and it seems to be versitile to personal taste too a real keeper.
This is a great recipe if you add cinnamon! My husband and sons all loved this one. Very quick and easy. I even forgot to simmer the sauce and it turned out great. I used pre-made pie shells and found I had to put them on a cookie sheet because they overflowed the pie. A larger pie shell may not have this trouble.
This is so easy to make. I only used about 5 or 6 apples because they were huge. I also forgot the to use unsalted butter but it was still great.
This was one of the best pies i have ever made! I didn't have a lot of time so used a premade pie crust and added some cinnamon to the mix it smelled and tasted soo good. Served with vanilla ice cream and it was the perfect end to a great day - The Packers beat the Redskins ;D
I made 2 of these for Thanksgiving. One for my parents house and one for a friend's. They were a huge success and my first pie baking attempt. I am ready to bake another one. What a great dessert perfect for any occation.
I was in charge of making desert this year at my in-laws house for thanksgiving and this pie was a major hit!! Everyone loved it. I was a little nervous because i had never made apple pie this way. But it was perfect. The only thing I did different was I didn't want to make the lattice crust so I just poured the liquid in the apples and then saved a small amount to pour on top. Yummy!! Five stars!
This turned out very well. I did add cinnamon & nutmeg. Thanks for the recipe!

Best apple pie!!! I make it for the holidays and everyone loves it!
Made this pie 3 times now. I used honey-crisp apples by mistake the first time and it resulted in an AMAZING pie. Like seriously I'm not one to boast but this pie was to DIE for. I used honey-crisp apples for the rest of my pies and each turned out equally amazing. I paired this with Ruth's Grandma's Pie Crust substituting the water for vodka (makes it extra flakey).
Cindy of 11/9/09--This pie is not what I expected given all the stars. It's okay but not all that. There are two recipes for this pie just so you know. One tells how long to simmer syrup, one doesn't. I used the one with the 2400 or more reviews. It doesn't. I thought both were identical so I just clicked on this one to rate. Thank the Lord because I thought I was going crazy reading this one's direction. Though the simmer issue is moot. No need to get all worked up over a rating. You are suggesting a person have to lie just because someone took time to post a recipe?? If I didn't like it...I didn't like it. It wasn't runny, it held up...but the taste was just okay. I am a seasoned cook...not a chef...but a seasoned cook. I followed THAT recipe from 'A' to 'Y' with 'Z' being the spice that I added. If I had not added spice...this rating would have ben a 1 at best. Since I DO know how to cook...nothing failed with pie. It's just ok! When I see this many stars...I just expected a lot more. You must be a relative but be advised to breath...it's not that serious. You responded to my previous comment/rating (this one replaced unfortunately) with wierd & hurt feelings over a recipe I have every right to rate. This apple pie is palatable at best for my taste so no-- it wasn't a disaster but it was just....oooookay. I still think the pie would fair better cooking the apples IN this syrup as well but again that's my opinion. And thank goodness for it!
I've made this recipe for the last two Thanksgivings and everyone loves them!!! I took in some of the suggestions that said to toss the apples in cinnamon and they turned out great! I plan on making this every Thanksgiving because it's such a big hit. Even my husband likes it and he's not a fan of apple pies!
This is a GREAT recipe. It was so easy to prepare and My Family Loved it!
My daughter picked this recipe out a few years ago. It's been at every special occasion since. Quite the show-piece. We do add cinnamon to the apples & really pile them high! It's the best!
Fabulously amazing perfect apple pie. I usually have trouble with apple pies being runny. Not this one! So delicious, made as written and five of us ate almost the whole pie at one sitting. It's that good!
Made no changes to this recipe and will definitely make it again. Will be #1 apple pie recipe.
Such a disappointment. Nowhere in the notes for this recipe does it warn that allowing the sugar mixture to cool would have disastrous affects. I should have known, but went ahead with this recipe anyways. In retrospect I think a traditional pie recipe would have been the way to go. Heed my warning though, don't start your sugar mix until all your prep is done and your pie is ready to be made.
Seriously, the best apple pie EVER. In hindsight, I probably should've done a practice pie to make sure all came out okay before Turkey Day. However, I didn't (do I need to have a pie for myself?) and as it turns out, I didn't have to worry, because it came out amazing. I did add some cinnamon to the caramel-like mixture just to make it a bit more seasonal, but pouring it over the crust made the apples AND the crust taste so good. I will be using this recipe from now on!
Made this pie exactly as the recipe said and it came out great! First pie to be gone at thanksgiving
the best pie ever! I took a slice to the chef that I work with and he was really impressed! yum!!
Fantastic! I took other reviewers suggestions and used a full crust on top, pouring most of the caramel sauce into the pic (where I had already added some cinnamon to the apples themselves) and then brushed the remaining sauce over the top crust. The presentation was so beautiful that I immediately made another on just to take over to my parents house- they gave it 5 stars too!
I have made the same recipie for a long time and then tried this one. It was fantastic!! A real hit with the family. I did learn though that it is very juicey, so put something underneath the pie pan if your aren't doing a full top crust. Great pie!!!!
have tried many different recipes but this is by far the BEST one! I add 1 tsp Cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg and 1 tsp vanilla as we prefer an apple pie with them. LOVE IT!!!!
I made this for Thanksgiving and brought it into work. It's easily the best tasting apple pie I've tasted or made. I added about a 1/4 to a half cup of the mixture to the apples before filling the pie and it seemed to work very well. I poured the rest over the top and it came out sooooo good. This is my apple pie recipe from now on. ;)
Made this for Thanksgiving, was a hit. I added cinnamon and all spice.
I don't care for making pies in general and apple pie is my least favorite, but I felt obligated to make one for thanksgiving so I tried this recipe. This is the best apple pie I have made or tasted. I don't like to review recipes to which I have made major changes having said that the only thing I couldn't resist was tossing the apples with some cinnamon before placing in the crust. I also hate making pie crust and used pillsbury ready made. It not only tasted wonderful but looked beautiful, and got thumbs up from everyone. This is the only recipe I will use for apple pie from now on. Thanks for a great recipe
I will be making this again as I did not get to use granny smith apple since neither of stores I went to had any available but it was delicious without them so still a 5!
I went through the recipe following the instructions, and went back to make sure I got everything. WHERE IS THE CINNAMON AND NUTMEG? You can't make apple pie without cinnamon and nutmeg. Don't worry. I fixed it. 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of nutmeg and 1/4 tsp of ground cloves. I also brushed the top crust with egg wash and sprinkled it with cinnamon-sugar. You can fix the recipe. You're welcome.
Super easy. Super Delicious. I also added cinnamon to the sauce and poured it on the apples, then the lattice top.
This was absolutely the best apple pie I've ever eaten. Normally, I am not a big fan of apple pie, but this one sounded different and it was fabulous. I took the advice of another reviewer and added 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg and 1 tsp vanilla to the apples before I put them on the crust. It was the best. I've now made this apple pie a minimum of 20 times and it's always great. It's one of the desserts I HAVE to bring to gatherings.....I'm expected to.
My favorite go-to apple pie. My entire family loves it. I love it because it's not only delicious, but so easy! I don't deviate from the recipe at all.
My first time making apple pie and this was just fantastic!! Definitely better than any apple pie I've bought during the holidays. I will make this for many years.
I have to confess that I really didn't care for this recipe at all. I followed the recipe with the exception that I added cinnamon to the apples. After the hour of cooking time, the apples were still too firm but any further baking would have burned the crust. I didn't like the sugar syrup blend that you pour over the pie, it just detracted from the flavor of the apples, I definitely wouldn't make this again.
Honestly, I got mixed reviews on this pie. My parents did not like it much, but my husband did. It does not take like a traditional apple pie.
I have never made a pie before but this was easy and top notch.Subbed 4 of 8 granny smiths with 2 golden delicious and 2 gala and added 1 tbs of cinnamon to mix....enjoy...try it with a crust using all butter and no shortening
I made this pie it was abdulutly delicious . I just suggest putting most of the Carmel on the apples before the top crust .
This pie is, bar none, the best apple pie recipe I have ever tried, and I've been trying literally dozens of pie recipes lately in preparation for Thanksgiving. Wonderful!
Fantastic - next time I'll add cinnamon & nutmeg to the apples before baking though
YUK. Way to thin. Horrible taste. My crust was perfection but I will throw out this grandmas recipe!
Came Out Wonderful!!! I did add a few extras that other people had mentioned.
The pies turned out fine but the quantities in that recipe are wacky. She must've been using the world's smallest Granny Smith Apples, because I bought 8, ended up using 6, and the 6 I used were enough to fill 2 deep dish pie crusts. I also added cinnamon to the apples. This was a much less dry apple pie than I'm used to; I usually don't like them because the crust is incredibly dry and powdery, but the liquid on top of this helped. I like the gooeyness in the middle. Served with ice cream.
We loved the flavor and the crisp top crust, but it was VERY runny. Even after being completely cooled, it was very runny. I did add a little vanilla to the carmel and sprinkled the apples with cinnamon.
This is the best apple pie i've ever made. It was firm and tasty. I added cinnamon, vanilla and brandy
The best apple pie I have ever has and my guests loved it!!!! Used the Best ever Pie crust recipe.
My family loved this pie. The only thing different I did was use two different types of apples, other then that this pie was great.
I love apple pie and like to try out new recipes. Intrigued by the caramel sauce over the top instructions, we made this for Thanksgiving. Fun to make, but overly sweet and buttery for my taste. Also, the caramel sauce can be tricky, so follow the directions carefully when making this pie. I used mixed apples - honeycrisps, pinkladies, and granny smiths - all on the tart side. The reviews that say to stick to the granny smiths now make sense due to the sweet caramel sauce. Alternatively, you could cut the sugar by as much as half (and reduce water due to less sugar). I mixed in 1 T of cinnamon and 1 t of nutmeg to the apples and about half the sauce before pouring apples into the bottom crust. Then added the lattice top and poured the rest of the sauce through the lattice. Baked up perfectly. This recipe includes a caramel sauce that seems to give some people trouble. It is like candy making and the instructions are important to follow. Bring the sauce to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Ideally, the recipe would include a temperature reading for the sauce because if you under cook it, it will be runny and soupy and if you over cook it, it will harden into a thick glob very quickly. Fun to try, but next time I'm sticking to my original favorite (2 T flour, 1 T cinnamon, 1 t nugmeg, 1/4 cup white and 1/4 cup brown sugars dry mixed with apples that have been tossed with 2 T lemon juice all poured in a crust, topped with dabs of butter, topped with a crust an
so wonderful! I did add some lemon to the apples and a touch of cinnamon. Looking forward to more apple pies this fall. THANKS for sharing!!
It was good, but not "all that." I wish I would have added some cinnamon, then it would have been phenomenal.
I made this as directed, and the apples tasted just a bit under done. I think next time I will saute the apples a little before putting them on the crust. I didn't know to cook them longer because the ones on the top which I tested were done first. I also put 2/3 sauce under lattice and 1/3 of the sauce over, and it worked well. **update** I made this again and cooked it longer than recommended (close to an hour) and used these ultra-tart mystery apples from our trees. OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! I wish I had more apples!
Family pleaser! I've looked for years for a good apple pie recipe and this is it! Only modified the recipe by stirring the apples with the sauce in a separate bowl before adding to the pie crust to evenly coat all the apples pieces. Then placed apple mixture into the pie pan, used 1/4 stick of cold better and cut into small pieces and dropped onto apples and then sprinkled apples with cinnamon. Instead of a top crust, cut pieces of dough and also dropped onto top of apple mixture. More cobbler like, but can't say enough about how good it tasted!
I made this pie exactly as written, as I think it's only fair to do that first before making additions or substitutions. I thought it was just unusal enough to pique my interest! It was very, very good! I loved the brown sugar/butter topping over the top but I definitely think it could have used a hint of cinnamon. Maybe because that is what I'm used to in an apple pie. My husband and son LOVED it and want this to be the only apple pie I make. It was very easy to do and it comes out looking beautiful. I will make again with just a touch of cinnamon. Great pie!
I made this pie for Thanksgiving. It was the best Apple pie I have ever made! I added traditional apple pie spices and cooked the apples in a pan ahead of time (just trying to save time as I was cooking 9 other things). I did a basket weave top using a crust recipe from this site as well. Everything was just perfect! My new forever apple pie recipe!
i have never made an apple pie before so this is my first an was very easy!! i had enough apples for 2 pies since i used large apples so i did one pie by the directions for the first but i added cinnamon to the mixture and on the second pie i filled the pie crust with the apples poured most of the mixture directly on the apples did the top sprinkled with cinnamon sugar then i poured the remaining over that. it was awesome!!
First time making an apple pie and I had no idea what to expect. I used store bought pie shells and only ended up using about 6 apples. I was so nervous about adding the sugar sauce on top, had no idea what it would taste like......well, it was like biting into a caramel apple. Best pie I ever tasted! My family loved it as well. Just delicious!
Taste so great!!!
With the suggestions from other bakers it made one incredible pie! I added 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of nutmeg, 1 tbsp of vanilla (minus 1 tbsp of water) , substituted 1 tsbp of flour for cornstatch and 6 red delicious apples. Definitely cut the lattice ahead of time and chill in fridge or freezer while you make the rest. I also soaked all the apples in the mixture before pouring into the crust then made another 1/2 batch of the mixture for the topping. When the pie had 20 min left, I then poured it over the top for a nice Carmelized lattice. I cooked it for 50 min at 350. This pie was a huge hit!!!
Loved it! Simple and always delicious, I did add some nutmeg and cinnamon to the mixture and mixed the apples in the topping then put in pie shell!
This is the best apple pie I have ever eaten. The only thing I would do differently next time is pour some of the sauce in the apples so I did not lose so much of it when the pie cooks.
I've never made a pie before and have my grandmothers crust recipe, but needed a filling recipe to go
I made this for the first time last year. In first reviewing the recipe I thought it had way too much butter but, thinking of Julia Childs, I carried on and added every bit. I did make a change adding a small percentage of Honey Crisp apples with the Granny Smith. I thought it was delicious and was happy when my niece raved about it and my sister asked me to make it again this year.
This came out soooo good!!! My husband really liked it. I followed the recipe exact and Loved the results.
I made this pie according to recipe. I've gotten raves about it. I love this pie!! I wouldn't change a thing
It was really yummy! I made it last Thanksgiving and will make it again this year. Here are my modifications: a) double the liquid b) I added some vanilla and cinnamon c) I only used 6 apples, 3 granny smith and 3 others types mixed) d) used apple juice instead of water e) used splenda instead of sugar f) brushed the pastry top with egg wash
Halved the recipe for a small pie with no top crust ( we are a small family of 4 ). Sprinkled cinnamon on the apples and then topped with the mixture to bake. Absolutely loved it!
This recipe is so easy and so simple! I make a homemade pie crust- it is not as intimidating as it seems!
This pie is amazing! I made it just like the recipe said and it turned out absolutely beautiful and delicious! I was a little worried about pouring the glaze over the top crust, but it made it shiney and georgeous. I will certainly be making this again! Thanks!
AWESOME! Decided to make this for Thanksgiving because I do not like pumpkin or pecan pie. WOW!! Thanks, Grandma Ople. You are now my only apple pie recipe.
Oh. My. God. YUM. I made this a while ago, and it was SO good. Apple pie is my favorite pie, and this is my favorite apple pie. I am going to bring this to christmas at my parent's house - I will be the star of the party, I'm sure!
Ive mad this pie twice now, exactly as written, my husband said its the best pie hes ever had. I have to agree!
Was very good. Got good reviews. Didn't have shortening so used butter instead. Tasted great.
This recipe was great..My family loved it....Thanks... I took the advice from 2 other reviews. I tossed the apples in cinnamon and sugar before puttting them in the crust. I also added 1 -2 tablespoons flour to thicken the sauce...
The glaze for the apples is the best !! It is so thick and yummy! It leaves a beautiful shine to pie when done! You won't be disappointed.
I've made this recipe twice now and it turned out great both times. Like some other reviewers, I tossed the apples with some cinnamon for the extra flavor. This pie looks bakery-made and tastes fantastic.
This pie was the first and best pie me and my famly ever made!!!we wouldn't chage anything!!!
I did like this pie, I thought the taste was good. I did make some changes. I did add some cinnamon to it, also a little vanilla extract. I followed the advice of others, instead of pouring all of the mixture on top of the pie, I did mix the apples in about half of the mix, then poured the rest over the top. My pie did come out a little runny, although I did add some extra flour. It tasted pretty good warm with some homemade vanilla ice cream!
This was my first homemade apple pie and turned out wonderful. I made the pie crust from scratch and tossed the apples in a bowl with a little fresh lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I then poured half the syrup over the apples in the pie and poured the rest of the syrup over the top crust. I used ginger gold apples and it turned out great. Definetely making this one a keeper. My husband couldnt believe I made the crust, he said it made all the difference. Try it!!!!!
This was absolutely the easiest pie to make for first-timers! I've made it three times and each came out PERFECT! I added the extra flavorings via cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. I diced the apples to make it easier for my four year old to devour. Looks and tastes so good that we'll be baking as gifts this holiday.
Delicious twist on traditional apple pie. I do add cinnamon & nutmeg to my apples, too.
I have never made apple pie....this was THE perfect recipe, and as one reviewer suggested it should be prepared exactly the way original recipe calls for as it came out amazing. My suggestion would be to prepare the entire pie before preparing the sauce, so that it doesn't have a chance to cool. Delish!!
This apple pie recipe is delicious! Everyone loved it! However, my only problem was the sauce was runny however it still tasted really good, slightly caramel. I am definitely going to be making this pie again! I only used 4 big bramley apples, which was plenty. I would 100% recommend this recipe!
This is THE BEST recipe ever!! Easy AND great tasting!! I haven't used any other recipie since!
My son said this was the best apple pie he had ever eaten. I did as some reviewers suggested and poured the syrup in and then put on the lattice. I brushed the lattice with syrup for browning.
Wonderful Recipe! Although I did add vanilla, nutmeg, and lots of cinnamon. Delicious!
followed recipe but used 6 apples. will try with 8 next time. also layered the apples tightly - will try to make them a bit more loosely packed next time.
This was the most simple pie to make. I received so many compliments. This is the pie I will make every time. I did mix 3/4 of the liquid with the apples before adding to crust, then I put the top crust on and cut 1" slivers then slowly poured the remaining sauce on. EXCELLENT!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe. I have never made a homemade apple pie before and this turned out wonderful. Wouldn't change a thing.
I made it with fugi apples It was the best apple pie I have ever had. I normally don't like apple pie. This one is amazing. Everyone had a 2nd slice!
Wonderful, don't skimp on the apples. I used golden delicious and granny smith, perfect combination.
I made this apple pie twice with granny smiths that I got from the same store. The apples were very mushy almost like apple sauce. Although it was delicious and the best tasting flavor. What am I doing wrong? Or, was something wrong with the apples
