It's funny. I always have quite a few frozen ripe bananas in the freezer just waiting for recipes like this. This one took me by surprize, because my Dad made a drink like this for my sister and I when we were little. I made it for my kids this morning, to go with the Egg Salad English Muffins I'd made for them (also from this site). They gulped it down, and I sat and thought about how I liked these just as much as I did when I was a kid. Only now, it tastes like a Banana Bread smoothie. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I'll be sure to make this often.
yum! I just love this drink! Since i loved it so much I thought it would be good to expirement with other indredients. I found that mixing in a bit of coconut milk to it to give it an extra flavor. Thanx for recipe!:)
I loved the submitter's description of her nostalgic drink and it made me feel like I was making someone's special memories for Hubs this morning. (I have a similar memory of my grandma's warm milk and honey at bedtime) Hubs enjoyed this, but prefers real smoothies to this banana milk drink. I appreciated that the submitter called it what it is, a drink, not a smoothie, which I tend to think of as something thicker. I used just a little Splenda, as the banana I used was very ripe and sweet. The dash of cinnamon was just what this needed to liven it up and give it a little complexity.
This drink was great!! I found it years ago in a Lifeskills textbook, and loved it then...so excited to find it again :) I always add 4 ice cubes to this drink to give it a better texture and colder temperature.
I just love recipes like this. A recipe created in tough times with simple ingredients that said to someone when you made it "I love you". It is basic, easy, incredibly delicious, nutricious and perfect as is. Sometimes I make with brown sugar and I always drink over ice as I like it really cold. Thanks Jeanne for sharing your story as well as your recipe.
