  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add chocolate and vanilla; mix well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  2. Pour into three greased and floured 9-in. round cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
  3. For frosting, in a large mixing bowl, cream butter until light and fluffy. Combine sugar and cocoa; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk. Add vanilla; beat well. Spread frosting between layers and over top and sides of cake.

Has a good taste, but came out a liitle dry. Maybe I was off on a measurement. It is worth trying again, though!

Good, Not Great. Not at all what I was expecting. I think it needs a bit of oil, as it was pretty dry. I didn't use the the frosting - instead I made "Satiny Chocolate Glaze" which was great....

This recipe is good and delicious! My parents loved it!

Made this for my friend's birthday along with chocolate chip icing. Tastes amazing when cold, like a giant thick brownie cake. Big hit, it was eaten every day for 3 days.

Cake is way too dry and the icing is way too runny. Very disappointed
