Barbecued Round Steak
I found this recipe years ago, and it has become a favorite of my family and friends. The combination of ingredients for the sauce seems to be exactly right.

This recipes is super simple and very yummy! The meat comes out super tender. It has a great flavor that is really different from anything I've tasted. Great way to make a yummy dinner with very inexpensive and very low fat beef. For anyone who doesn't have tomato juice on hand, I googled it and you can use equal parts tomato paste and water as a substitute.

i went out on a limb and "simmered" my barbeque in a crock pot on low for 5 hours. the meat came out very tender & served well over rice. no changes made aside from my using a thick cut 1 1/2 lb. top round steak. had the weight been 2 lbs. i would've doubled the sauce. thanks for your tasty recipe mina!
This was scrumptious! I am on a very tight schedule, so I threw all of the ingredients into my crock pot (doubled the garlic) and put on low for about 8 hours. There wasn't very much talking during dinner because this was the main focus! I have never had a barbeque sauce quite like this before!
Only subs I did were I didn't have ground mustard, so I used yellow prepared. I also didn't have tomato juice, so I did watered down tomato paste. The sauce is FANTASTIC and it tenderized my round steak unbelievably well. Will TOTALLY make this again!
This recipe was great. I doubled the sauce and added a little tabasco sauce my husband and I like things spicy. I browned the meat in the skillet but put it in a covered casserole dish with cut onion rings on top and cooked on 325 for about 3 hours so I could do things around the house. It turned out great and it made plenty my husband ate it on bread the next day for lunch and he said it tasted just like barbecue. I will definately make this again.
I had some rounds steak that I wanted to use up and this recipe was very good. I followed the recipe exactly and served over rice. We enjoyed it and my husband actually asked if he could have the leftovers to take in his lunch the next day.
To save time, I cut up my steak into strips and then threw everything into the crock-pot. I did NOT brown the meat first. I don't have tomato juice on hand, so I substituted Ragu traditional sauce for the juice and ketchup. Had white rice to put it all on. Fast and easy and delicious.
I was looking for something to do with a package of round cubes that I had bought--this worked out great. I used 3.25lbs of meat and the only thing(s) I did a little different was to double the sauce, add an extra clove of garlic, and I used regular mustard (spicy brown) as a substitute for the spice--everyone loved it and ate it for lunch the next day!
Absolutely outstanding. This is the best recipe I've found on allrecipes.com in quite awhile. 6 and 8 year olds loved it as well as the adults. I wouldn't change a thing. Even the leftovers were great!
This was a fabulous way to cook a really cheap cut of beef that is usually tough to eat. I doubled the sauce amount, and it was perfect to use as a "gravy" for the rice I served it over. I didn't have tomato juice, and I subbed a double amount of tomato sauce (to make the sauce go farther). Also subbed garlic salt for the regular salt (didn't use minced garlic). In general, the sauce was very salty, but I think that was due to the salt it called for, and the salt content in worcestershire, ketchup and tomato sauce. It wasn't too salty; everyone said it was great! I pounded my beef and cut it into bite size pieces (I have 4 small kids who don't always chew well :), and the meat was so tender! I cooked it at 325 for 2 hours in a covered baking dish. Thanks for a great recipe!
Very tasty and flavorful. Beef came out very tender. Great way to use up cheap cuts of beef. My husband thought it was a little too much vinegar, but overall he liked it and would eat it again.
Great recipe for a cheap cut of beef! I did chunk up an onion to saute in with the beef, as well as added in about double the amount of brown sugar, half the vinegar, and used tomato sauce and a can of rotel tomatoes in place of the tomato juice. I also doubled the garlic and added in a big dash of italian seasonings. I used a little over 1 lb. of meat to the recipes sauce ratio and it was the perfect amount of sauce to serve over rice! I did not do the cornstarch mixture. At the last 30 minutes of cooking, (I did the full 2 hours cook time) I removed the lid to let the sauce reduce and thicken. The sauce reminded me of a recipe from Taste of Home that I make for sweet n sour pork ribs, but with a bbq twist. The meat was so tender that you could cut it all up with a fork! So good! Its a very versatile recipe, and I think next time I may even chop of some potatoes, carrots, and celery and add into it as well to serve it up a little differently. Great recipe!
Makes a tough cut very tender--excellent! I used tomato sauce instead of tomato juice and didn't have to use any thickening--I also used just a little more brown sugar to ease up the vinegar potency--fabulous--my family just loved this
Good flavor but the simple fact is, round steak is round steak and no matter how hard you try to disguise that fact, it's texture and flavor will always remind you.
Very tasty! This was a nice way to use up some round steak that was in the freezer and it turned out pretty tender.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. You are absolutely right, the ingredients of this recipe is exactly right....Even my picky toodlers loved it.
The sauce is incredible! I will make it for other bbq's, thanks for the recipe.
This was so yummy. Instead of rice, we made hoggies. My husband liked it so much, he's taking the left overs to work to share with his co-workers. Didn't have tomato juice, so I added bbq sauce.
While the beef was very tender, the sauce had a strange flavor to me and my fiance. It was almost like a Chef Boyardee flavor.
It was delicious - my husband loved the sauce and remarked it would be good with pork or chicken too. I served it over rice and my husband cleaned up the sauce left in the pan with a slice of bread. Will definetly make again.
We all liked this one very much! It was very easy to make and had a great flavor. I doubled the sauce and used tomato paste with some water because I didn't have any juice. I also added some sweet onion that I browned with the meat at first and simmered with the sauce- just because I had a half an onion that needed using. Very good easy dinner.
My whole family enjoyed this. It is different and delicious. I followed the recipe exactly. This will become a recipe I use often.
Let me first say, we live on a farm and have an abundance every year of round steaks. I'm always giving them away, as we just do not like them! I decided to try this recipe as a way to use them up. We absolutely LOVED the sauce, but can honestly say, we still do not like round steaks! I've decided I'm going to use this sauce recipe on a pork roast or even making mini meatloafs out of them....we liked it that much! Thank you for sharing!
My husband thought this was very good. I liked it but, not as much as he did. The only change I made was to use water and tomato paste instead of the tomato juice. Will make again.
This recipe was so easy and tasted good, too. My 15 month old ate it all up and asked for more. I didn't have any tomato juice so used the tomato paste w/ water as one reviewer suggested. I also did not have any garlic (ran out) and used garlic powder instead. I also added about 1/2 tsp of liquid smoke. Cooked for two hours and the sauce had dwindled so much that I did not need to thicken it w/ the cornstarch. The meat came out nice and tender and fell apart. The person who said this recipe was too sweet must really hate BBQ sauce...the sauce was great.
This was fantastic. I doubled the sauce part of the recipe and tossed all into the crock pot for 3 hours on high. Tender meat. Tangy sauce, but not too spicy for the kids. They devoured it.
This is a delicious rich barbeque recipe. I served it on hard buns with chips. I did use thin sliced round steak. My family loved it. Thanks for a wonderful BBQ beef recipe.
One of the best recipes so far I have used for round steak! I made recipe exactly as stated except I put everything in a dutch oven on my stovetop and simmered on low for 1 1/2 hours.
After browning and draining the steak I put all of the sauce ingredients in the same pan and mixed well. I put a lid on and placed it in the oven at 325 degrees for an hour and a half. Then I took the lid off for 15 minutes so the sauce could thicken on its own as I really didn't want to use the cornstarch. I will make again for sure!
Good! No complaints here. Made as directed and it came out fantastic. Served with rice and steamed broccoli. Great meal.
I doubled the sauce as many suggested. This was simple to make and I loved the flavor. My husband thought the sauce was too heavy though. I will review what others have suggested for modifications and make again to see if it is more to his liking.
Doubled the sauce, which is a must in our house. Used spicy V-8 (all I had) & omitted chili powder ('cause I just plain forgot), and it still had delicious BBQ flavor. Even my very picky 11-yr. old loved it. This is definitely in our menu rotation from now on - thanks, Mina!
My husband raved about this! Delish over rice, or next day we had it over mashed potatoes. Yummy either way. Made exactly as written. Just added some honey.
Really great taste. And a great way to use round steak that doesn't involve cream of something soup. We agree that this sauce would be great with other meats as well
This was awesome! We used the left overs the next day to make BBQ sandwiches. I made mine in the crockpot and cooked on low for 8 hours.
TOO SWEET,This recipe just didnt cut it.All the ketchup and then the brown sugar made it too sweet.Cut out the ketchup and sugar, and add a dash or two of liquid smoke..maybe this can save it,other then that, would not make again.
Excellent. Our dinner was unexpectedly delayed, so this simmered for 2 1/2 hours and I totally forgot to do the final step of thickening. But honestly, it didn't need it. The flavor was amazing and the beef was so tender. My extremely finicky son took one bite and said, yum! Then after the second bite, got a huge grin on his face and gave me a big thumbs up. Enough said.
It was pretty good! I would have liked a little more sauce!
Amazing as is. I throw it all in a crock-pot and let it cook all day. Super tender and so flavorful. Definitely one of our homes favorite meals. I serve it over mashed potatoes.
This was really good - especially the sauce!! The only change I made was to use V8 instead of tomato juice [because I didnt have any]. The sauce was really good with the buttered green veggies I served as a side dish as well. Thank you!!
I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. The steak turned out tender, true, but the recipe overall just wasn't that great. The sauce is really strong. While edible, nobody was really all that enthused about this dish. I didn't enjoy the flavor at all. I'm not making this again.
My husband loved this. It was pretty quick to put together and the flavor was really nice.
Delicious! I followed the recipe except for reducing the salt to just a dash.
I changed this recipe up a bit because I was missing a couple of ingredients but it came out very good. Would make again :)
Solid recipe. The beef didn't get quite as tender as I was hoping, but it certainly wasn't tough by any means. The leftovers made for great sandwiches.
This was good but a little too tomatoy for our taste. More like sloppy joe sauce than bbq sauce. The meat came out very tender though!
This recipe is definately a keeper. I served it over rice, and my 2 preschoolers loved it, as did my husband. I will definately keep this one in the "dinner rotation".
Ken and kids loved it. Easy fast and simple. Extra tender for tough cuts.
I was a little disappointed in the recipe. My husband loves BBQ, so I thought this would be great. I didn't have tomato juice so I used tomato sauce, but I'm not convinced that made a huge difference. It was ok, just not spectacular. Will keep looking for recipes.
This was good. I didn't have tomato juice, so I used a small can of V8 spicy vegetable juice. Gave it a nice kick. My family likes food spicy anyway. Would make again. I didn't thicken with corn starch.
Prepared the recipe with steak as described and loved the sauce so much have since used the sauce on chicken and mixed in with hamburger for sloppy joes with the same rave results. Great recipe.
Even my picky kids like this recipe. We raise our own beef and this is a great recipe to use up the large amount of round steak that typically sits idle in the freezer. Thanks
Tasty, I used left over round steak from the night before that we had baked in the oven. It was already tender so I just boiled and simmered the sauce and when it was heated thru added the cornstarch.
I simmered for 2.5 hours and didn't have the need to use the cornstarch. Other than that made as directed and enjoyed!
Very tasty. I sauteed some garlic and onion before adding the sauce ingredients. Used tomato paste and water, as I didn't have tomato sauce. Skipped the corn starch and water as the sauce seemed thick enough for me. Served over rice as recommended. The whole family enjoyed it. :)
