Smoky Barbecue Sauce

I generally do not like bbq sauce. At all. Not even a little. So when a soup recipe that otherwise looked delicious called for bbq sauce, I had none to hand since I do not buy nor generally use the stuff. What to do? Allrecipes to the rescue (once again). This recipe for bbq sauce was awesome. I used fresh garlic as I've no dried and a dash of cayenne because I don't have hot sauce. It was sweet, smoky, and right tasty. Also easy peasy. The soup turned out great and I used the leftover sauce to great effect on shredded chicken for bbq chicken sandwiches. My husband may even get me to acquiesce to bbq sauce on barbecued meat if we use this sauce.

I made this recipe and used it on a rack of pork ribs on the outdoor grill. The ribs were outstanding. The next day I used it on chicken, again, outstanding flavor. It has a very nice smoky taste.I rate it 5 stars. Dan
Very good sweet, smoky sauce! I like a little more heat so I added dry mustard and cayenne. Used it on boneless pork ribs with huge success. Thanks for the recipe!
Just made this for the first time. I tend to like my ribs to have a sweet and hot flavor. I may have gone overboard with the pepper sauce...I think I opened up parts of my nose that haven't opened in years.
First time making my own bbq sauce. I too didn't have liquid smoke, only had Pomegranate chipotle sauce that I used. I minced one clove garlic instead of using garlic powder. As another review said, it's too ketchupy so I'll cut back to 2 c or less next time. The ingredients make for a good and different flavor from bottled bbq sauces I've bought and I'll continue to make this. I have time to let it simmer, covered on low for longer than 10-15 minutes (it's simmering now and of course I'm taste testing it :) ), stir every now and then, really let the flavors incorporate with each other! Thanks for the great recipe!
This BBQ sauce is FANTASTIC!! I used it for brisket and NOTHING was leftover. I did add a dash of cayenne pepper like some others did and added a bit more of W sauce and liquid smoke. Keeping this recipe!
This is an unusual recipe for an Australian to make - our idea of BBQ sauce comes from a plastic bottle, is runny, vinegar-y & (after this), slightly depressing!! This sauce was thick, rich & had the best sweet, sour & smokey BBQ flavour. I used fresh garlic & dried chili as I didn't have any chili sauce, & poured it over a couple of pork chops before slow baking them for an hour & a half. So divine. This is one cooking smell I don't want out of the house! It's going to be hard to beat this sauce.
Delicious BBQ sauce. I added Jack Daniel's (about 1/4 cup) because I like a hint of whiskey/bourbon with my sauce. It's on the spicy side, which is just how I like it. Highly recommended recipe.
I've been doing a version of this for years covering meatloaf for the last 5-10 minutes of cooking adding some mustard to the recipe. I also like it a bit spicier so I add more wooster, liquid smoke, cayenne pepper for our tastes. Also keeps well in the fridge. It's awesome on burgers too!!! I keep a container in the fridge and heat up to cover a variety of meats.
This barbecue sauce is amazing! I halved the recipe and added a little more worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke. I also added about a half teaspoon of cumin. I used it in my chicken recipe and it was a really good restaurant quality meal. I hope this helps, this is a great recipe!
I love the flavor or this sauce. I added a teaspoon of minced garlic and fresh spices. Great Recipe!
Why buy commercial sauce when it is this easy to make and so good? The liquid smoke is what makes this sauce.
This was perfect. I used tomato sauce (passada) which made no difference at all - except to calories, salt and sugar. I used some straight away, which was good. And then I used some more a week later, which was great. Easy, quick, tasty.
My new favorite BBQ sauce recipe! So easy and so good! Thanks for sharing!
I followed the instructions as directed, only using half ketchup/half Sweet Baby Ray's barbeque sauce, then dumped the sauce over two packages of Lil' Smokies that I had in my crockpot. Couple hours on LOW and we were in business. We all liked this, even me, and I hate barbeque sauces. Nice change from the usual BBQ sauce/grape jelly sauce I usually make.
I will never buy store barbecue sauce again! This was fabulous! My whole family loved it! Thanks for making our mouths sing!
This is a great-tasting, easy-to-make bbq sauce. We thought it was just a bit ketchupy so we added a little bit more Worcestershire and a little bit more liquid smoke, a few extra dashes of hot sauce and just a sprinkling of chili powder and it was much better.
I liked this, but made a couple little tweaks... some apple juice and vinegar to add that something extra... then a bit of mustard... didn't have liquid smoke on hand so a tps of chipotle gave it great smoke. Excellent.
Tastes too much like ketchup. Easy to make, but that is the only good thing I got from it.
I made this with my homemade ketchup and used a habanero chili sauce we picked up in Mexico. Delicious on ribs! I used only half of the sugar, though. It was great!
This is the first bbq recipe I've found that I love. It's spicy, smoky, and sweet. Definitely a keeper.
I used this recipe on boneless pork ribs in the slow cooker-fabulous! I did add an extra pinch of cayenne to make it a little spicier and it came out amazing! As with another reviewer I do not usually keep BBQ sauce in my kitchen, so this was an amazing addition to my ribs.
10 3 13 .... http://allrecipes.com/recipe/118810/smoky-barbecue-sauce/ ... Yes, I changed it; but it is a good start. I subbed tomato sauce for the ketchup, added some vinegar, honey & cayenne. Thickened with cornstarch. Thanks for submitting! Current MILD RECIPE: 15oz tom sauce, 1/3c brown, 1/4c vinegar, 1/8t cayenne, 2t cornstarch. 1/8t cayenne is too mild to add to meat; good as condiment though. Current HOT BUT-NOT-TOO-HOT RECIPE: 15oz sauce, 1/3c brown, 1/4c vinegar, 1/2t garlic&onion powder, 1/4t cayenne, 2T worcestershire. Heat to gentle boil. Thicken w 2T cornstarch&cold water. Once thick, add 1t liquid smoke. PREVIOUS GOOD recipe: 1c tom sauce, 1/4c brown sugar&vinegar, 1 1/2T worcestershire, 1/2t tabasco, 1/8t garlic powder, 1/32t cayenne thickened w 1/2T cornstarch&1/2c water.
Loved it and so did my kids....just reduced the ketchup to 2c and kept all other measurents the same. Slathered and soaked chicken breasts in this for about 4 hours and then grilled. Super yummy! Thanks!
Didn't have hot sauce to add, but the sauce turned out good anyway...
So good! I used this recipe for my first time making ribs and it was delicious and easy
Great, great bbq sauce. Once in a while for a little kick, we cut up a couple of chipoltle peppers in adobo and add it. Other than that, nothing needs to be changed!
I used this to go over pulled pork on a tortilla. Awesome! It's just the right amount of flavor and tangyness. Left out the hot pepper sauce and peppers because I'm not really into spicy foods and sauces. So easy to make, too!
made shredded beef with it..very good recipe......also this very easy to make ur own and works well with a variety of ingredients. crowd pleaser...............luv it
I just made this sauce and it was great, added a few ingredients turned out nice and spicy after adding cayenne,Chili powder and cumin plus some extra Tabasco, liquid smoke and freshly squeezed lemon juice.i will definitely make it again thank you for the great recipe.
The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because I had to change up the recipe a bit....I didn't have pepper sauce and so I used chipotle chili powder. But my husband loved it and I can't wait to try it on other meats this summer.
So you're looking for a quick and tasty BBQ sauce? Look no further- this is DA BOMB! I bake chicken using another recipe and put this on it midway and afterward. It almost tastes like it was made outside! This is my go to BBQ sauce recipe!
After a LONG day of canning, with the ribs slow cooking all day, I just wanted to finish dinner and relax. Of course, I was out of bbq sauce. Allrecipes to the rescue. This recipe was AWESOME! It made more than I needed, but now I want to make something else that requires BBQ sauce. This is THAT good! Thanks!!
Oh Yeah!!!I followed the newer version,BUT,to start, I sauted 1/2 onion in a bit of olive oil and butter, added 1/2 finely chopped jalepeno, lg clove of garlic, a hit cider vinegar, and a squeeze of lemon. Let simmer for almost an hour as I added things and this is simply put"The Best"!!! 5 stars to be sure!
OMG!!!! I will never buy b-b-que sauce again! I tolk the other's advice..I added more liq. smoke and woster. I also added about 2-3 T apple juice and 1T vinegar (would have used apple cider vinegar if I had it..), I also added about 1/2 cup italian dressing. I also bumped up all the spices and added cumin....best sauce ever thanks to everyone for the recipe!!!!
I had never used liquid smoke before! A revelation. This was very good, but I made some changes based on comments below. Half passata and half ketchup with less sugar, and paprika instead of hot pepper sauce....I might try only Passata next time, as it did still tasted very sweet.
