The Self-Closing, No-Drip Olive Oil Dispenser I Can't Cook Without

The first olive oil dispenser I swooned over was a wide-bottomed glass beaker with a flanged collar at the neck, a removable glass pour spout, and huile d'olive (French for olive oil) neatly etched on its side. In addition to its simple elegance and the romance of finding it in a little kitchenware shop in Paris, I loved that you could use it one-handed while cooking — no stopping to unscrew a sticky bottle cap! — and that any drips from the spout collected in the neck and flowed back into the bottle. 

Unfortunately, the spout shattered on a tile kitchen floor many moons ago, and I was never able to find a replacement. So for years I've settled for spouts that drip down and gunk up, require plugs or covers to keep out dust, and do not perfectly fit standard bottles of olive oil or other cooking oils. I had begun to think that — absent a plane ticket to Paris and a time machine set to 2008 — a no-drip, good-looking, easy-clean oil dispenser was just not in the cards.

But then, in a recent fit of online searching and resolve, I found the holy grail of oil dispensers: The Purplecrown 500ml Olive Oil Dispenser Bottle ($17; amazon.com).

The lead-free glass bottle has a wide mouth that means it's as easy to clean with a standard dishwand as it is practical to run through the dishwasher. A black band provides grip and also shields the oil from excess light. 

The best part, though, is the screw-on, self-opening top, made of stainless steel, food-grade BPA-free plastic, and a silicone gasket. When the bottle is upright, the spout remains sealed to keep out dust. Powered by gravity and motion, it silently and gently opens as you tip to pour. And any drips flow back into the bottle as it returns to its full upright and locked position, so there's no need to degrease the bottle or counter after each use.

It is large enough to hold a full 1. bottle of oil, perfect for olive oil, avocado oil, and other oils you want to have handy when cooking. I haven't tried it for anything but oil but imagine it also would work for salad dressings, vinegars, soy sauce, maple or strawberry syrups, and other pourable condiments.

I adore it so much that I have since purchased a second, smaller version for extra-virgin olive oil ($16; amazon.com). The smaller bottle holds 300 ml (about 10 ounces). It has a stainless steel band that shields most of the oil from the light but still leaves you a little viewing strip on the bottom, so you'll know when you're running low. Like its larger cousin, it has the same ingenious top that lets me pour one-handed without drips, a plane ticket, or a time machine. In short: C'est magnifique!
