My Precious

Smigel the dog
Credit: foodieroz

"I've had Smigel (SMEE-gul) since she was 9 weeks old. she's a Chi-Pom-Peke — my made-up designer word for a mutt mixed with Chihuahua, Pomeranian, and Pekingese. She's named after a character from The Lord of the Rings. She's actually a service dog, trained to alert me to take a necessary medication, and she travels with me just about everywhere I go." —Rosalind Brazel (aka foodieroz)

Mighty Moose

Moose the cat and Dave
Credit: Allrecipes Magazine

"Moose is a Savannah cat (a hybrid of wild serval cats and domestic cats). I got Moose when he was a kitten. I searched for him for two years because I was specific about the breed I wanted. I got lucky when a lady thought it would be a good idea to have a couple of these cats in her office. In no time, she realized how much attention they require to properly train, so Moose became mine.

"He is a hunter through and through; he loves to catch lizards, birds, and even rabbits. He has traveled many thousands of miles with me, and he enjoys being in big crowds and has a confidence I've never seen before in a cat. My girlfriend and friends say he's a daddy's boy. Although he's leash-trained, he doesn't need a leash because he will just follow me around wherever I go." —Dave Thompson

Dear Dante

Sheila Gordon and Coco
Credit: Sheila Gordon

"This sweet 2-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix lives with us in Talty, Texas. We rescued Dante through the Texas Russell Rescue. He was found in the streets of Houston and was skinny and underfed and had tapeworms when we got him. He has since flourished.

"Dante loves rawhide bones, naps on fluffy blankets, and stealing stuffed animals from our daughter. He also likes to gently bite the end of your nose to show affection. Dante is the sweetest dog and acts as a service dog to our older Jack Russell, who is deaf. Dante wakes her up in the morning to go outside and goes to get her when I call them to come back in. We are truly lucky to be his forever family.

"We named Dante after the dog in the movie Coco because he's our spirit animal."  —Sheila Gordon

They Call Me Mister Pip

Mr. Pip the tuxedo cat
Credit: Cheryl Passe

"When I saw this gorgeous tuxedo cat on a local animal shelter's website back in 2011, I knew I had to go and rescue him. He was named by the volunteers at the shelter. The name seemed to suit him, so we kept it — and that's Mr. Pip to you! Mr. Pip loves catnip, chicken, tuna, and long walks on the beach. He also enjoys basking in the sun, grooming himself, belly rubs (but only for a limited time), and protecting the perimeter of the house. He only snuggles at bedtime and prefers sleeping under the covers. He's a great cat with an awesome purr-sonality!" —Cheryl Passe

Some Bunny to Love

Bella the bunny
Credit: Linda(LMT)

"I rescued Bella seven years ago when she was only a baby. Sadly, she was abandoned in a field after Easter. Rabbits are so unique and wonderful. Because they are fluffy and cute, people tend to think that's all there is to them. but they are so much more.

"Bella is shy and timid during the day. She loves sleeping in a cushy dog bed under her triangular wicker tent. She will grunt like a little piggy if approached too quickly when she's in her 'hidey' place. But at night, when we let her out of her penned area, she runs laps around the couch and then stretches out on the floor, appearing to be watching TV. And when she sees me each morning, she joyfully bounces up in the air: She knows that breakfast will soon be served. I couldn't be happier to have Bella in my life. She is a joy and a wonderful companion" —Lina Torlay (aka Linda(LMT))

Go Go Getty

Getty with his Christmas presents
Credit: Joan Kennedy

"Getty is a cockapoo, and Christmas is his favorite time of the year. Each morning during the holiday season, his first stop is the tree. He never bothers the packages, but he sniff them, circles them, sniffs again, and then goes about his business. On Christmas Day, when we all gather around the tree, Getty is front and center waiting for his presents, which he opens on his own. He plays with his toys for a minute or two and then goes around the room helping open packages for anyone who will let him. He loves to rip that paper off — more than getting the presents, I think." —Joey Joan

The Look of Love

Timber
Credit: Mari Haslam

"It was a cold, rainy fall evening in 2009 when I noticed this little blond puppy running alongside a busy road. We already had three dogs at home, but I told my husband that we had to pick up this border collie-golden retriever mix. My husband agreed on one condition: that we find someone to adopt him. Months later, we did. But the day we were supposed to hand Timber over, after a night of crying, we decided to keep him. I have never felt a closer bond with any pet. He is loving, loyal, friendly, and unbelievably smart. He fetches the paper in the morning, gets my husband's slippers at night, and loves to go for long walks with me." —Mari Haslam (aka Timber)

Mogley, the Jungle Cat

Mogley the cat
Credit: Christian Meza

"I found my little man at the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in South Dallas. His original name was Motor because he purred a lot, but I renamed him Mogley (after the boy from The Jungle Book) because of his spunk and curiosity. Mogley is an overgrown ball of joy. I got him when I lived by myself, and he was what kept me from going bananas. He's very friendly and never shy about demanding my attention. He'll hid behind a corner or doorway, and as soon as I walk past, he'll jump out, swat the back of my feet, and then immediately run away." —Christian Meza

Heroic Heath

Heath the dog
Credit: Kim Snyder

"Heath, an English shepherd, is my service dog. His training began at eight weeks, and he is constantly learning how to help. He brings me my meds each morning, helps with laundry, hands me things I drop, and even helps me undress. He also brings me things on request, interrupts me if I become anxious, and provides medical alert. The bond between us is very powerful. We were only separated once when I was in surgery, but he was in the recovery room waiting. Heath has given me back my independence and changed my life. He's my angel in a fur coat." —Kim Snyder

Gimme Shelter

Julia Levy and her dog Elmer Fudd

"This is when I found Elmer Fudd at the shelter, just before I took him home. He enjoys chasing (but never catching) squirrels, playtime with friends, and his favorite 'pig' toy. He's not the snuggliest, so when he decides that he's too tired to move away, it's the best." —Julia Levy

Proud Mary

Mary the pygmy goat
Credit: Mariah Baker

"About seven years ago, I came across pictures of baby pygmy goats and I just had to have one! I ended up with three: Mary, Nugget, and Snowball. They've since expanded into a small herd consisting of 15 pet goats. From the beginning, Mary (front) was so sweet. She picked up on things quickly. Within weeks, she knew her name, would eat out of my hand, and even learned a few tricks. As time went by, we developed an incredible bond; she would climb all over me and try to eat my clothes. I was initially concerned about her doing well with my other goats because she's hornless, but she has maintained her status as head of the herd." —Mariah Baker (aka mariahsimone)

Purrfect Duet

Melanie Fincher

"Ringo and Starr are my two ginger kitties — Ringo is the big fellah and Starr is the baby. I adopted them a couple months apart, and they were both found as strays before they were rescued by local humane societies. They've become fast friends, and much to my surprise Starr is the more feisty of the two. Both are love bugs! They make life so much more fun, especially during quarantine!" —Melanie Fincher, SEO Writer, Allrecipes

Here Comes McTrouble

Annie the German shepherd dog
Credit: Brenda Valenti

"Annie, our mischievous German shepherd, has quite a few little quirks. If there's a piece of newspaper on the floor, she will lie on it. When we're at our cottage, she likes to fish for minnows with her mouth. She doesn't usually steal human food, but she is something of a cherry tomato bandit: If I put my tomatoes on a window sill to ripen, she will tip them, one at a time, onto the floor and then eat them. She has two nicknames: Annie Oakley and Annie McTrouble.

"At Christmas, an elderly neighbor of our always buys Annie a stocking stuffed with dog toys. We open the stocking and give her the toys, one at a time, but not before placing friendly bets on how long each will survive. If there's a dog toy that she can't destroy, we haven't found it. We also wrap gifts for her to open herself, which she really enjoys. And after she's opened hers, she always want to open ours! —Brenda Valenti (aka Bren)

Fluffy McFluffster

Gris the cat
Credit: Carl Hanson

"Gris (pronounced gree) is a lover not a fighter. Actually, no. She is also a fighter. Almost every night, in the wee hours, when I'm sound asleep, she hops up onto the bed and punches me in the nose. 'Hey, whatcha doin'?' Jab, jab. 'Sleepin'?' Then she comes in close, purring, with her wonderful herring breath and tickles my nose and cheek with her whiskers. Normally, I would not be amused by this kind of behavior — and I would not recommend any human-type person attempt it. (Also, herring breath on humans? No thanks.) But everything about Gris doing it is strictly top-tier adorable. I wake up, and she flops over and lets me rub her fluffy belly. Then, often, she'll adjust herself to sleep on my arm, using it like a pillow. What can I say, I am fully owned and operated by this fluffster. And she knows it." —Carl Hanson (aka lorem ipsum), Senior Editor, Allrecipes

Sassy Fiona

Fiona the dog
Credit: VeronicaB

"Fiona is an English bulldog and has quite the personality. She is a big (62 pounds) sassy-pants. She love chew toys and will, within a few minutes, remove the stuffing and squeaker out of any toy you give her. She loves to eat anything — including shoes and socks. Her good looks must come from all the beauty sleep she gets; she is quite the snorer. She enjoys looking out the window — any window will do — for hours at a time. She's a very stubborn girl and likes things her way, but at the same time she's the sweetest furry ball of love! I love her to pieces. She's my shadow and companion. —VeronicaB

Little Cat-Dog

Charlie the dog
Credit: Gailmax

"Charlie is a spunky Pomeranian. As with most little dogs, Charlie's 'inner big dog' barks at all neighborhood dogs and anyone coming to the house. He patrols the perimeter of our backyard, shouting warnings to any dogs in the alley and a squirrel who regularly visits.

"Despite these guard-dog tendencies, Charlie loves visitors, just as long as they rub his belly. He get along with another dog who occasionally stays with us. Cats are no problem either, but then I sometimes think he is part cat. He doesn't play with toys at all, but if I put a treat on the floor he will play with it like a cat. He bats at it and hops around it, barking until he finally picks it up and hops up on the couch to eat it." —Gail Ennis (aka Gailmax)

Enzo and Luca cats under Christmas tree
Credit: Vanessa Greaves

"Enzo (front) and Luca are sister tortoiseshell cats who snagged our hearts when my husband and I accidentally stumbled upon a pet adoption event. Being littermate kittens at the time, they were so adorable we couldn't bear to break them up, so we adopted them both. Unfortunately, we didn't know much about 'torties' beforehand, and it turns out they're monsters of mayhem. Okay, maybe I'm overstating it, but they do have their challenges. However, they're family now, and as we do with troublesome but beloved family members, we cope.

"Yet they have their charms: Enzo circles my legs crying for lettuce as soon as I pull out the salad spinner, and Luca grooms me like I'm her kitten when I'm trying to read. And yes, they have boy names even though they're girls. But what do they care? They're cats." —Vanessa Greaves (aka foodelicious), Senior Editor, Allrecipes

The Dog Was Named Indiana

Indiana Jones the dog
Credit: Smart Cookie

"Indiana Jones is the best dog in the whole world. He's a Bernedoodle, with the laid-back ease of a Bernese mountain dog and the awesomeness of not shedding everywhere of a standard poodle. Maybe we love him a little too much." —Elise Mayfield (aka Smart Cookie)

Mini Pearl

Ms. Summer Sausage the dog
Credit: Angela Cox Edge

"Ms. Summer Sausage, our miniature blue dachshund, is from Louisiana and loves to wear necklaces. She's often quite the diva, although she also never had a problem with rolling in cow pies with her pearls on when we lived on a ranch.

Ms. Summer Sausage's favorite human foods are baked salmon and chicken. She will jump up in a chair at the dinner table and sit up on her back legs like she's waiting to be served. She loves her baby blankets, pillow, squeaky toys, and half-chewed-up rawhide bones. And she sleeps under the covers, right in the bend of my knees." —Angela Cox Edge

Saint Gigi

Gigi the Saint Bernard dog
Credit: Kerri Foulks

"Gigi is a Saint Bernard. She is loving and gentle and loves strawberries. She was on her way to the local pound (someone got her from a breeder without first checking with his wife, who wanted a Chihuahua!) when I got a call that a dog needed me. I'd just lost my beloved golden retriever mix and was waiting for another dog to cross my path.

"Naturally, Gigi loves the snow. It's pretty common in the winter for her to disappear for a while into a little nest of snow she's created for a nap. And even though Midwest summers can be brutal, she loves lying in the hosta bed in the shade on summer days." —Kerri Foulks (aka Keeja)

Not-so-Mad Max

Max the cairn terrier dog
Credit: Patti Weiss

"Max was adopted after he was found abandoned in New Jersey. He and his black-furred brother, Russell, are both cairn terriers (like Toto from The Wizard of Oz). They're inseparable. They nap together, eat together, and sit together. They love each other as much as we love them.

"You can literally feel Max give a sigh of relief when he lays next to you and puts his head on your lap — he loves to snuggle. We lovingly call him the World's Most Un-Fun Dog. He rarely barks and is extremely easygoing, perfect for dressing up.

"Max loves food. His superhero power is being able to hear a Cheez-it box being opened 30 miles away." —Patti Weiss

Aka Jaws

Bowie the dog
Credit: Aimee Gasparre

"My husband, Tony, and I are true dog-lovers. After losing our beloved 16-year-old Lab-chow mix, our house felt empty, and we were really sad. So I started searching online for rescue puppies. I came across some living near us and fell in love with the silliest picture of an adorable shepherd-looking pup in a purple shirt and hat. When we went to meet Knox (whom we later renamed Bowie), it was love at first sight.

Bowie, a bit older now, is playful and funny and loves to grab anything in his reach. He has many nicknames, including 'Jaws,' as he is always grabbing something — socks, newspapers, and mouthfuls of grass, leaves, and sticks. He has brought us such joy and loves our family and friends. The feeling is mutual!" —Aimee Gasparre

Laid-back Lilly

Lilly the dog
Credit: Lee Ann Gray

"Lilly was an anniversary gift from my husband. We originally got her to be a companion to one of our other dogs. Lilly is a sweetheart who loves people, and, although she likes to wrestle with one of our cats, is always polite to houseguests. When she meets new people, Lilly never barks or runs around. She just sits patiently at a distance until our other dog finishes her spastic greeting. When there's finally a lull in the excitement, Lilly trots over to say hello and welcome our guests." —Lee Ann Gray (aka Lucky Noodles)

Mister Mister

"This cheerful 12-year-old chatterbox lives with us in Greendale, Wisconsin. Mister came to my sister and me six years ago, when a friend became ill and could no longer care for him. He and our other male cat, Leo, love to wrestle and chase each other around before collapsing on the floor for a nap. Mister is very talkative. He greets me at the door when I come home, and I swear he's giving me a full account of everything that he and Leo have done all day. Mister loves his treats: He sits right next to his treat dish to let me know he'd like one. At bedtime, he waits patiently for me to get ready and hops in at the foot of the bed. In the morning when I wake up, he's right beside me." —Nicki Kroll, @NickiK

Tito

English Bulldog named Tito on a car seat
Credit: Jessica Borders

"English bulldogs are the funniest, most loyal, stubborn, lazy, joyful, gaseous, life-of-the-party, loudest-snoring, proudest dog breeds—with absolutely no sense of personal space and an 'I don't give a crud' cat-like attitude — that you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. Tito is no exception. He loves to go to the office, play in 30-second spurts (it's very tiring to play!), eat snacks, go for rides, meet new people, have his picture taken, and be scratched or rubbed all over his chubby pink, white, red, and black polka-dotted body. He sleeps between us in our king-size bed—a body part of his must be touching a body part of ours. I cannot count the number of times I've awoken to discover his precious snout smashed on my cheek. Tito is a true blessing to our family, and everyone who meets him falls instantly in love for life.

"Yes, it's Tito, like the alcohol. Tito is named after the founder of Tito's Vodka, whom Tito's dad, Bill, once had the pleasure of meeting." —Jessica Borders, @Jessica Borders

Good Golly Miss Molly

Credit: Manella Leahy

Meet Miss Molly, a sweet 13-year-old black Labrador who lives in Broadway, Nova Scotia, with her adoring mama, Manella Leahy.

"We got Molly when she was 5 weeks old. Ever since she could run, she's loved chasing after a tennis ball. At 13, she is a bit slower now, but she still has spirit. She is quite a clown, loves going for walks, loves her stuffed toys, and is protective of the people she loves — as we are of her. She likes some vegetables but not peas. (She spits them out!) She likes to lie on the mat in the kitchen while I am working there. She is a joy, and we are very happy she is in our lives." —Manella Leahy, @manella
