Great dish!very versatile & easy to change to suit your family tastes. This is a dish I make frequently - but I use egg noodles, I saute the garlic and some onion in a large fry pan, brown the chicken in strips, mix the soup w/milk and parsley flakes & pour over the chicken while it's cooking. Then I layer the noodles, chicken, sauce & parmesan - about 2-3 layers with chicken on top, and sprinkle with parmesan, then in the oven at 350 for 1/2 hr. you need LOTS of 'sauce' because the noodles really soak it up. I pretty much use at least 3 cans of soup thinned with milk to make the sauce! It's a winner served with garlic bread!
I make scalloped potatoes almost like this every time....however I chop the onions and add some Parmesan - layer like this....potatoes, onions, S&P, sm. chunks of butter, 1.5 Tbsp. flour, 1 Tbsp. Parmesan, then again - finish with Parmesan which will brown up nicely - & milk just to the edge of the top layer. I don't bother heating it up either. Pop in the oven (on a baking sheet to catch drips)and bake at 350F for probably 1.5 to 2 hrs.(poke a fork in to test doneness). Let sit a bit to let liquid absorb into potatoes! Im' 72 & my mom, grandmother always made them this way. You can also add bacon bits for a nice light flavor and to change it up a tad. My hubby hates Parmesan......& so far has never realized it's in there!!
This is definately 'basic' - I'm 73 & learned this from mom!!! I don't usually have lots of cheddar hanging about to use when I decide to make sauce, so I use a couple or three heaping tablespoons of Cheeze Whiz...... awesome!!! Works great, tastes great and makes it very smooth. 'Light' works too.
This is awesome......with a couple of changes. I used 1# ground beef, about 12 mushrooms & an onion. I saute'd the mushrooms, also the onions + 1tsp minced garlic, & added S&P + the jar of sauce. turned out 2 lg. dishes....one 9x13 & one 8x8.... really good!
I have been eating/making pancakes 'from scratch' like this all my life (I'm 73) - but may I suggest a couple of changes? We always have them with bacon & fry it first....then rather than butter or oils, we put 2 Tbsp. bacon grease into the milk/egg mixture. This gives it a lovely flavour but is not greasy. If Buttermilk is available it should be your first choice! Adding Vinegar to reg.milk is just the way to sub. for buttermilk. We also cook them in just a hint of the bacon grease on the griddle or pan. Adding Blueberries is great too. Also, I would double this recipe at least just for 2 or 3 people. We have pancakes w/Canadian Maple Syrup for supper about once a month!
This is how my grandmother, mother & I did it before they invented electric hand mixers! Always works, but if you add minced onion right after draining, and then the milk (skip the butter) then whip with ele.mixer they come out awesome. Doesn't hurt to add some cream cheese (chive) too!!
Made this yesterday. Only changes I made was using Splenda rather than sugar (I'm diabetic); and pecans rather than walnuts, plus I added cinnamon, nutmeg & ginger as recommended by other reviewers. this is NOT a great banana bread. Not much banana flavour....& it's too dry. Made a large loaf tho!
Split peas MUST be put in a large bowl and covered with cold water and left overnight to soak! ALSO... YELLOW split peas are a must! No self-respecting Canadian would use green!!! LOL. Otherwise this recipe works. If you don't soak the peas overnight they never get soft and mushy like they should in the soup.
Hey people.....if you are making hamburgers from 'scratch' you need to add an egg to 'bind' the meat and keep it from falling apart on the grill. a few seasoned breadcrumbs will also help with that. otherwise, this is awesome eats!
Ok...they taste ok, but not very 'lemony' - & I even added extra zest! My biggest complaint is that they aren't deep enough - too skinny and I even took one reviewer's advice and added 1/2 tsp. of baking powder to the custard! Probably won't make these again. leadfoot
The women in my family have made pancakes this way for ever! The one thing we do different is: add bacon grease to the batter and on the griddle......instead of butter. Then butter the pancake on your plate if you want to before adding syrup. 'Box' pancakes.... heaven forbid!!! Scratch is the only way to go! Leadfoot
I made these exactly as per the recipe. I made them the day before Thanksgiving so I could reheat them with sweet potatos for dinner the next day. OMG, they were the worst tasting things I have ever made....I was so embarrassed, and thankful I'd made lots of sweet potatos too! The sprouts were bitter and the dark brown outsides were tough! I won't be making these again.
