It's true — you have to take care of yourself so you can take care of others. Here are some simple ideas to create an afternoon of relaxation to help you and your loved ones unplug and recharge.

Set the Mood

Raid the flower garden, dim the lights, and light a few candles to create a relaxing amber glow for a DIY spa day.

Soothing Sugar & Sea Salt Scrub

Mix together 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup sea salt and 1 tablespoon refined coconut oil, avocado oil, or olive oil in a bowl or glass container. Divide among small lidded glass storage jars, and stir 2 to 3 drops of your favorite essential oil* into each jar using a wooden craft stick or a small spoon. To use, apply a dab to moistened hands or feet, scrub for 1 minute, and rinse.

* Essential oils are natural but highly concentrated — a little goes a long way. Do not use undiluted directly on skin, and be sure to follow any advisories on the labels, especially if you're pregnant.

Floor Seating

Gather around the coffee table. Scatter poufs and fluffy pillows for comfy seating. Add throw blankets or tasseled towels for added comfort.

Calming Hand Soak

Stir a tablespoon of Epsom salt and a few drops of almond oil or your favorite essential oil into a bowl of warm water. Sprinkle with flower petals and give your hands a long, luxuriant soak.

Recipes for a DIY Spa Day

Take the edge off with a sweet peach cocktail bursting with ginger. This so-simple ginger syrup has just the right amount of spice from fresh ginger and whole black peppercorns. Or choose take advantage of berry season with a blackberry cocktail. This summer sipper is customizable. Out of rosemary? Try mint or sage. Not a tequila drinker? Vodka works just as well. Or make it a mocktail and replace the tequila with a splash of lime or blackberry sparkling water.

It's hard to relax with your stomach rumbling. Serve up a light, yet hunger-busting salad. If making this ahead, add the vinaigrette just before serving.
