Taste of America Road Trip: Northeast
Sea, Surf & Scallops
By Karyn Spencer
Historic lighthouses, fresh seafood, and picturesque marinas dot the coastline of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Take a long weekend to explore this 100-mile stretch along U.S. Highway 1, with jaunts along State Highways 146 and 156, to get you closer to the water. Starting in New Haven, Connecticut, weave east through New England towns with charming downtowns, stately homes, and stone fences. Then head to the shore, a collection of Atlantic Ocean inlets and bays with sandy beaches and lapping waves, and wrap up the trip in Narragansett, Rhode Island.
