Taste of America Road Trip: Midwest
Great Lakes & Superior Cheese
By Karyn Spencer
Whether you view it from sandy beaches or wooded overlooks, a breathtaking expanse of blue water is the centerpiece of this loop around Lake Michigan, the only Great Lake completely inside America's borders. Head east from Chicago and spend a week or more exploring the region's peaceful shores, serene woods, and quaint towns. Lodging options range from cozy cabins to upscale resorts. Want a shorter trip? Cut across the lake in a car-carrying ferry, such as the S.S. Badger, the last of America's coal-fired passenger steamships.
