11,000 Containers of Ice Cream Were Just Recalled for Metal Pieces

In difficult times (be they breakup or global pandemic-related), few things provide comfort quite like a carton of ice cream. No matter what's going on, that little pint of joy can be there in the freezer waiting for us, letting us steal a fleeting moment of joy or two.

But in a 10-month period that saw all sorts of food surpluses, shortages, and plant closures, it shouldn't come as too much of a shock that not even ice cream is safe from the occasional recall.

That's the bad news for anyone who recently purchased one of 11,000 potentially compromised containers of ice cream from Weis Markets over the past month. According to an FDA announcement, Weis Markets' recall stems from the fact that "products may be contaminated with extraneous material, specifically metal filling equipment parts." One customer reported finding "an intact piece of metal equipment" in their ice cream, though there are no reports of any injuries or hospitalizations.

In terms of specific items, Weis Markets' recall pertains to 10,869 containers of their Quality Cookies and Cream Ice Cream sold in 48-ounce containers with a sell by date of October 28th, 2021. This specific lot (bearing UPC 041497-01253) was sold at 197 Weis Markets stores across West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York. Additionally, 502 bulk 3-gallon containers of the brand's Vanilla Dairy Ice Cream were recalled, but these were not intended for retail sale and have been removed from circulation.

Any of Weis Markets' recalled ice cream can be returned to its point of purchase for a full refund. It's undoubtedly a bummer to have to give ice cream back, but it sure beats an unexpected bite of metal.
