With restaurants closed, ordinary citizens are urged to eat more delicious foods.

If we've learned one thing about the food supply chain during the COVID-19 pandemic, it's that restaurants are a crucial business partner for farmers and food producers of all types. Without their wholesale business, the world simply produces more food than it knows what to do with. While you'd think that'd be a good problem to have given how many still go hungry, our supply chains have been largely unable to respond in a way that avoids unnecessary waste.

Perhaps that's why the UK National Farmers Union has something of an unorthodox request for Britons: please eat more steak.

Without business from restaurants, it would seem that Britain's cattle farmers have their hands full with a potential glut of steak and nowhere to sell it. The issue stems from steak's perception as a rare (well, medium-rare) indulgence that's best enjoyed while dining out.

When it comes to cooking at home, ground beef and other cheaper options tend to prevail. But if Britain's farmers want to avoid potentially going belly-up from their excess supply of prime beef cuts, National Farmer's Union head Minnette Batters says it's time for Brits to invite steak into their homes during the Pandemic.

"We eat a lot of steaks out of home but out of retail we eat a lot of mince," she told the Telegraph. "We need to get people to be eating these high quality steaks - if people can have a steak night that's a great way to help.

Other nearby countries who haven't recently completed a messy divorce from the EU have also asked their citizens to do their part by eating delicious local staples. A French dairy industry organization has launched a campaign urging people to do their patriotic duty by eating more cheese with a #Fromagissons ("let's act for cheese") campaign. In nearby Belgium, which leads the world in frozen French fry exports, locals have been asked to eat an extra helping of fries to cut down on a serious 750,000-ton potato surplus. Sounds like a pretty reasonable and good request, honestly.

While the US certainly has its share of pandemic-induced food surpluses and misallocations, there hasn't been the same unified push to eat American as of yet. The good news, at least, is that any American steak you might want to buy should be perfectly fine to eat.
