The best Thanksgiving potatoes? Mashed potatoes may be the consensus opinion around here. But we acknowledge, mashers are not the only potato-based side in the Thanksgiving universe. And there's always room on our Thanksgiving table for cheesy scalloped potatoes or savory potato casseroles. Even a salty serving of golden French fries would be welcome beside our traditional turkey and cranberry sauce. (A drizzle of turkey gravy, who would deny them?)

So yes, there's more than mashers. Let's take a peek at some of our best Thanksgiving potato recipes beginning, naturally, with these special-occasion mashed potatoes!

VIDEO: Chef John's Ultimate Mashed Potatoes

The secret to truly amazing Thanksgiving Day mashed potatoes is, truth be told, not really much of a secret. It's butter, and lots of it. Tremendous loads of butter. A shocking amount. But this is Thanksgiving dinner, the single most special meal of the year, so maybe we can suspend our health concerns for 24 hours. (We'll be extra good on Black Friday!) For best results, use the good butter -- and bring it down to room temperature. Watch Chef John whip up these once-a-year mashers:
