Vin & Vigor

Whether in your salad or on your skin and hair, apple cider vinegar does a body good — one reason it's cropping up in the beauty aisle these days.

It makes a mean pickle and, sipped straight up, it's sure to make you pucker. But apple cider vinegar, ACV for short, also can make hair shine and skin glow.

Unpasteurized ACV is rich in probiotic bacteria (often referenced on the bottle as the "mother"). And even pasteurized ACV is rich in prebiotic pectin. So consuming a little of either can support healthy digestive flora. That in turn supports beneficial bacteria that live on the surface of the skin, which can reduce breakouts and lessen redness, dryness, and irritation.

When applied topically, the acid in ACV reinforces a healthy skin pH. ACV's natural astringent properties also soothe inflammation and exfoliate dead skin cells, making it a popular skincare ingredient.

If you're using apple cider vinegar from your pantry as a DIY astringent or toner, you'll want to dilute it (one part ACV to three parts water—or more if you have sensitive skin) before swabbing it on.

Used on the scalp, ACV may reduce the yeast that causes flakiness and fight hair loss by making your scalp healthier overall. ACV also is a tried-and-true tonic for increasing hair shine and removing product buildup. And a periodic rinse with diluted ACV helps smooth hair cuticles for less frizz and more volume, one reason many hair products now prominently feature ACV as a clarifying or smoothing agent.
