Did You Know?

  • Sangria gets its name from sangre, the Spanish word for blood. (Ewww!) That's because in Spain it's traditionally made with red wine, which stains your clothes just as badly. Ask anyone who's run with the bulls in Pamplona.
  • It's also the unofficial drink of said bull-running. Go figure.
  • When it's made with white or rosé wine, it's called sangria blanca.
  • And what foods go with sangria? Everything from the most robust BBQs to the lightest salads. After all, sangria is served alongside Spanish tapas — small-plate appetizers and snacks that range all over the flavor map.
